  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Blood results

My bunny has had bloods for chronic weight loss and the most recent ones have come back with a high alkp and bile acids and a low total protein, my vet said its nothing to worry about but the bile acid was twice the normal she's not my usual vet so I'm worried should I be doing anything now as its weekend I don't want to leave him if these results mean he needs attention, he's at his lowest weight now we're now at 1.5kg he's eating well but he's becoming exercise intolerant.
He's only 10 months and I've only had him since march. I'm very concerned

No she said she doesn't know much about rabbit bloods but thinks they point to a chronic weight loss but isn't sure why? What is hepatic coccidiosis? What are the symptoms?
They want to do a dental even though no spikes seen and he's eating like a horse this doesn't sit well with me obviously it would require a sedation and if there's a problem with his liver won't this increase the risks?

Thank you for the link Jane it sounds like this may be his problem I'm a little confused though will the problem resolve on its own?,or will he require treatment? Should I postpone the dental? Sorry for all the questions but I'm at a loss he's happy pooping, eating but he is becoming tired easier and I'm not sure what is best to do I clean everything daily and do proper disenfection once a week should I increase this?

*If* it were to be Hepatic Coccidiosis then he would most definitely need treatment.

I would be extremely reluctant to put him through a GA/Dental but I am not a Vet !!

How do I go about getting a confirmed diagnosis? Im not entirely confident with this vet but she seems open to suggestions so I can discuss things with her. I'm just bit titchy about the dental as he's eating well and I always thought you could tell when rabbits had dental probs I've always noticed with my female she goes of certain things whilst he's eating everything :?

If you read the link I posted there are details of diagnosis and treatment

Some Rabbits can continue eating normally despite severe Dental issues. So as I say, I cant say for certain what could be going on.

I'm nowhere near as well-versed as Jane but totally agree with her on this. If the bun is eating well he shouldn't be losing weight. Why not put a new thread in chat asking for recommendations of really bunny-savvy vets in your area?

I'm in Edinburgh so close to the vet school but require a referral to be seen which I may push for, I have an appointment arranged for tomorrow to discuss diagnostics so I can know for certain what I'm dealing with, and I may ask for referral if my normal savvy vet will be off for a while thank you for the replies
I've only had him a little while and I hope I can get him well

Babies how did your rabbit do? Were they bonded at the time as I'm worried about my female rabbit also although she seems fine ?

Unfortunately, despite being treated by a rabbit specialist (staying with him for 2 weeks). my poor bunny didn't survive. He was almost 8 and a half-wildie I had rescued as a baby, so the situation was rather different from yours.

Yes, he lived with 2 others, who are fine.

I regretted posting my original reply - but I was just trying to stress how important it is to get treatment urgently if this is the problem.

No need to regret it I understand and thank you I'm all confused but I will keep pestering vet til I get somewhere because the weight loss is dramatic and he's already had pneumonia he's only a baby and I want to help him as much as I can

Yes, my Sutton's weight loss was dramatic and he had pneumonia when he was admitted but then he had further tests. Good luck!
