bisc and matt had the new combination vaccine today

it was supposed to be just bisc having the combined one but we decided to try matt with it aswell, because the vet said the single myxi vaccine is being discontinued in about six months (not 100% but probably) so if matt had the single today and then vhd in a month then he would have a problem in october when he needed the single again and it wasn't available.

i was a bit nervous about it but the vet said it's not shown any problems and been fine in trials and other countries.

it would be great for them to just have one vaccination a year though. :thumb:

eta: the vaccines were £39 each.

I've just rang my vets it's £42. Doughnut felt a bit unwell with the single ones but let me know how the combination one is. She was just sleepy and not herself but obviously always worth getting. She'll try out the combi one in July.

How can vets charge different amounts for the same vaccine :?

It could be different areas, different vets pricing systems...anything really. I had a quote last week for an operation on a dog. £450 at one vets, it cost £49 at a different vets:shock:

I've just rang another vets who won't do it. Apparently you have to give the myxi jab differently with a bubble under the skin so they're not getting it as said just the scruff of the neck doesn't work as well. Also rang the specialist vets and they want to investigate it more before they introduce it. I'm well confused now. I'm sure my vet does both jabs the same unlike the other vets!

bisc has a dodgy tummy today. could be the stress of yesterday or because he had some grass that was slightly damp. he was quite shaky in the taxi on the way to the vets and stayed by the front of the carrier to be right next to me. when we got home we took them in thr garden and he nibbled some grass before i realised it wasn't completely dry. i moved him away but he had a bit and has a super sensitive tum.

he's hunched up and has left a caecotroph on the floor which smells. he has his 'look' so i knew straight away he wasn't feeling 100%. i've increased his metacam a bit and he's had maxolon aswell and some tummy rubs so hopefully he will start to feel better soon.

matt is fine, although the stress of going to the vets and having a vaccine has made them both a bit more snuffly but that usually happens anyway and settles down again after a couple of nebuliser sessions.

bisc is fine now and back to his normal hyper self! it only took one dose of maxolon as usual and a slightly higher dose of metacam. :thumb:

Good to hear that bunnies are starting to have the new vaccine with no ill effects :D - especially ones like Bisc and Matt who have had some health issues.

I'm sorry but I think that vet is talking nonsense! The new one has been specifically tested on its effectiveness with it being given all into the scruff and it has been shown to be MORE effective than the existing myxi vaccine. There are still plenty of questions about the new vaccine for which time will tell how it goes, but the vaccine is different (for one thing it is actually made from myxi which the previous one wasn't) and is therefore given differently. It's just not comparing like with like for that vets to make that assumption, I'm afraid.

As to why the charges are different at different vets, it's a bit like asking why a bottle of coke costs 50p from one vendor and £1.30 at another or why the same sofa costs £300 in one shop and £380 in another...they each set their own pricing structure. Some vets have more expensive consultations and cheaper drugs, others charge more for drugs and less for consultations. They each work out how the client pricing of each item works for them, and that will differ from practice to practice, just as all other shops differ in their prices for the same item.

Thanks for the info. I'm sure my regular vets who are giving the combination vaccine didn't give the myxi jab any different to the VHD one anyway so not sure about all that bubble stuff. Like you say all the research beforehand, I would be confident giving the combination one and also a lot less stressful for Doughnut, only one trip to the vets:D

i have to admit, i was a bit worried about whether we had made the right choice for matt, but he was fine and both were running about as normal as soon as we got home. usually they lie down and rest for a bit. it has made matts snuffles a bit worse though, but he had his stronger course of meds just before the vacc as usual and that helps i think. :thumb:.
