The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Swelling after castration

ao1981

New Kit
Hi. My rabbit was castrated yesterday. I picked him up at 6.30pm and all was fine. He was eating and drinking no probs and wound was fine.

I have taken him out this morning to give him his meds. He still seems alert and fiesty but the two sacs are really swollen. I will obviously be going vets as soon as they open at 8.30 but is there anything I can do in the meantime? Or has anyone had a similar experience?

Many thanks

I have seen buns quite swollen post neuter. Some do swell more than others.
If at all possible I'd keep him rested & don't let him do anything strenuous until he has been checked by his vet.
Try & distract him if he is worrying the wounds.
What meds did he have & is he still eating, drinking, pooing?

Thank you for replying.

He is on Baytril and Metacam. Just had first dose.

He has been eating pellets, greens and a rabbit cereal bar treat. I kept hay out last night as I didn't want it sticking to him. He has been pooing all night and has just done first wee. He is alert and desperately shaking the bars of the indoor cage in an attempt for freedom again!

So I shouldn't be too worried before calling the vet at 8.30?

An hour seems such a long time when you're worrying!

Some swelling is normal after castration - it often looks like they haven't actually removed anything. If you're concerned about the amount of swelling though, it won't hurt to give the vet a call. As your rabbit seems to be behaving normally otherwise, I think it's fine to wait until they're open.

He sounds to be recovering well. I would try to offer him plenty of hay now as that will be best for his guts, but pop it in a hay rack (if you have one) or in a bowl that wouldn't be big enough for him to sit in just for a few days while his wound heals. After a few days, he'll be fine to have the hay back on the floor, or in the litter trays if that's what you usually do. :)

Thank you for your reply. He does have a hay rack on his outdoor cage, but it's built on to the cage. I'll find a bowl for him.

I'll give the vet a call when they open.

Many thanks

Ok, the vet isn't concerned. I think I am being overly cautious. I just didn't expect to see so much swelling.

I'll monitor regularly...

The swelling can be alarming if you're not expecting it and it's good that you're being vigilant. :D:D It should go down within a few days but, if you're ever worried at any time, you can always ring back and speak to the vet again.
