The new mxyi vac What **** vet school says about it

Collielover

Mama Doe
I have just read this on facebook thought some of you would like to know what one of the leading Rabbit specialist says about it .
This is from the Buddies rescue site

The **** vet have told us they now have the new myxo-rhd vaccine in stock but are still keeping some myxo single vaccs in stock too as some clients are refusing the new combined vaccine as they don't want to be one of the first to get it. Any new drug or vaccine has been years in the research, testing & manufacture & then get licensed & costs huge amounts of money prior to being launched. A new vaccine would have been tested many many times on bunnies so when we take our bunnies along for it, they will not be 'the first guinea pigs'. Of course it is an owners choice if they still want the single vaccine done just now although this will be phased out so soon there wont be a choice.

All mine will recieve it they are all due there injection this month and will be getting the new type

My vet hasn't got it in yet but I am excited about it and our healthiest bunnies will be getting it as soon as they are due. Then i am going to take our "boardeline" bunnies some who haven't been vaccinated before :D

My vet says it's perfectly safe and I trust her. Smoo will be getting it when she's due.

Its how I feel about the old vacc as last year I had mxyi case's here and the rabbits had been vaccanated .It was then I found out that the injection we were getting wasnt actually made for myxi virus but for somthing like it and had been found to help the fight against myxi and this vaccuation is been made for the myxi virus and is stronger . I dont ever want to go through what I did last year again as it made me ill and alot of my rabbits ill because of it. I am still not back at work and wont be for a while yet I have been told

My vet still had a couple of questions regarding it when they went for their myxo beginning of the month. Mine are not due vaccs now until September so I'll likely not know how he feels about it until then. It's looking positive though if these other specialist vets are confident about it.

Still a bit worried about giving it to my more poorly buns.

I know it has been thoroughly tested, but presumably so is every vaccination, including the cylap VHD and it still had reactions.

Thankfully, mine have all been done a short while ago, so I will have longer to think about it. No doubt by the time they are due, the single vaccinations will be finished

When i was at the **** Vet in January my regular vet there was talking about it and seemed very happy about it. She really talked well about it and said it was safe and i do trust her.

Going on thursday for bunny check up and nail clipping and will talk to her more it about it then.

I am sure I read somewhere that if a bunny had already been vaccinated with the single vaccine it couldn't have the dual vaccine, it was only for bunnies that had never been vaccinated?

That's been discussed multiple times over in various threads, Snowy. Yes the datasheet does say that bunnies previously vaccinated with myxo might not develop a full VHD response, but it has subsequently transpired that this does not apply in the UK because the current UK myxo vaccine is not made from myxo. Current understanding is that it is only a potential issue for bunnies in the UK who have actually had real myxo...and even then it only applies if they have never had a VHD vaccine previously. If they have never had a VHD vaccine, then they need a separate VHD booster a fortnight later the first time the new vaccine is given, but after that the new vaccine will stimulate a response to both.

It's just one jab annually - because the myxo part is more effective against myxo it has been tested as effective for the full 12 months so no need for a six monthly booster.

The myxi jabs we give now are actually made from the Shope Fibroma Virus, which provides some immunity against myxi (This is known as cross immunity). The new jab I believe is made with the actual myxi virus (a dead form so no risk of causing myxi) which should provide full or nearly full immunity

Im very excited about this new jab, as is my vet :thumb:
