Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Eye and ear problems connected??

Little Pixie was off to the vets this morning as she had watery eyes. She has never suffered with this before (she's two). It's just clear and nothing yucky yet but her eye lids look a bit sore. The vet gave her some drops for me to use twice a day. The vet then checked her ears and they had wax in them. I was amazed as she has always had the cleanest ears ever! I check all my buns ears once a week and they were all fine a few days ago. Pixie is eating and pooping normal and is the same happy little bunny as ever. There is no signs of a gooey nose either as that is clear, do you think the ear problem is connected to her eye problem?? The vet gave me drops for her ears too as she said it could be mites. I haven't seen her shaking her head or grooming herself any more then usual lately otherwise I would have checked her ears more often. I just feel such a fool for not looking in her ears every day when I check their bottoms! Do you think it will all clear up ok?? I'm just hoping I've caught it early so the treatment will get to work really quickly. If it does all clear up is there any oil etc I can pop in her ears perhaps once a month just to keep any 'nasties' at bay??
Many thanks guys, sorry for the long post, just worried about my little darling

I have no idea sorry but my vet did say that watery eyes can sometimes mean dental problems. I can't see how the eyes and ears would be connected but I'm certainly not an expert and only go on what I'm told when I visit the vet or bunny specialist!

Watery eyes can indeed be a sign of dental problems.. (feel like I'm always mentioning dental problems in posts lately!!) Did you vet check her teeth? Did the vet mention why her eye may be watery? Sign of infection or anything or did she give you the cream just in case?

I'm sorry, I didn't say this did I, the vet did check her teeth and all was fine : ) Just a mistery as it came on so quickly. Thanks for replying so quickly guys :thumb:

That's good :) Just be aware that tooth root problems can cause watery eyes also and not all spurs can be seen but tbh if this is the only symptom (apart from the mucky ears) then I wouldn't worry too much about her teeth unless she starts going off her food or acting in pain.

I wouldn't say the ear and eye problems are connected unless if she has mites they have irritated her eye in some way? Possibly she has had a bit of dust or something in her eye which has caused the irritation. My Xena is currently on eye drops for a small ulcer on her eye and I've read quite a few posts on eye problems recently. Maybe there's something in the air? lol.

It's the tooth roots that cause the eye to water because they can compress the tubes. They can also have tooth root issues without spurs (I have one of these) although that is more uncommon.

What did the vet say the cause of the eye issues was?

Mites (of any type, ear, fur, skin, etc) can become an issue when a bunny is run down. The majority of bunnies have a small amount of mites their their immune system keeps under control, however, when they get run down, the immune system can't fight the mites and whatever else is going on and that's when the population can explode out of control, so yes, it's very possible that they are both related and it also indicates that potentially your rabbit might be dealing with something that is making her feel really rough.

I'm going to keep an even closer eye on her but at the moment she really is acting normally and running around pinching treats off her boyfriend!! I'm going to invest in some vet bed for her as she is currently on newspaper and of course, loads of hay. I was thinking the vet bed would give her an extra cosy place to snuggle into, I know when I'm not well on goes my very squishy extra soft dressing gown and straight away I feel better : )

Just had a thought, could her eye problems be anything to do with laying in the sunshine, she's always sunbathing and even when I put up covers the slightest glimse of a sun ray and there she is!!
