  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Selina - very ill :(

Okay so I went into the shed where Selina and Bruce is this evening after work and Selina was all hunched up - which is unusual obviously. I picked her up (something she doesn't usually let me do either) and put her in the dog crate to keep her seperate from Bruce whilst I phoned the emergency vet. She said that the best thing would be to bring her in etc etc. I tried leaving her with some carrot and a bit of hay and some water in the carrier but when I went back half an hour later, nothing had happened so I decided to take her in.

Basically she is being kept in over night before being transferred back to my normal vets in the morning. She is very ill, and would have died had I not brought her in and she has got bloat and a bit of diarohea (sp?). I have already been given an estimate of £270-300 so bloody hope it won't be more than that or I will be bankrupt!! and a possible other £100 at my normal vets.

Does any one have advice on what to do if she comes home in the next 48 hours at all?

Thanks.

I really hope she will be ok and am sending lots of vibes for her.
I think with meds and any dietary advice its best to follow whatever the vet recommends. Remember to ask about pain relief and whether she will need any fluids, how long to give any meds for, etc.
Really hope she is feeling better by tomorrow.

I hope she makes it through the night. Sending her lots of vibes.

If she is at the vets then there's not much you can do but wait and hope. Did her partner go with her? I've heard that if they are kept seperate but able to see each other it sometimes helps the poorly bunny to pull through.

Make sure, or be as sure as you can that she's not in any draughts if she goes back in the shed, and that she's got plenty of nice deep straw of hay to bed down in so she dosent chill. Id keep the carrots away, theyre not particularly good for rabbits, can be hard for them to digest and have I believe quite a high sugar content. Carrot tops are good though!
When you put her back with Bruce, just keep a close eye on them, rabbits can sometimes start scrapping when they've been seperated. It's not guaranteed, but just be watchful.
Personally I'd keep her in the house if you think she will settle easily, but make sure Bruce comes in also to keep them together. If she seems very unsettled then Id pop her back in the shed if thats what she's mainly used to, just keep the stress levels as low as possible. You vet will possibly ask you to keep and eye on her appetite, poop output and urine output, and if she/he dosent ask you to do this, do it anyway ;)
I hope the little mite is ok, good vibes from me also

I hope she is feeling better this morning. If she is able to come home I too would keep her inside out of any draughts etc and keep her warm. Make sure you get some recovery food from the vet as well as any painkillers. I always have some Critical Care (recovery food) in my first aid box as it is the easiest one to syringe.

I hope Selina is much better today. Well done for noticing that she was ill and getting her help so quickly. Would your vet allow you to take Bruce in to keep her company?

Just to let everyone know Selina passed away last night. Please keep Living_a_lie and Bruce in your thoughts today :(

Rest peacefully Selina, you were a truly beautiful little bunny x

That gave me a physical chill when i read through the posts and got to that dreadfully sad announcement.
Poor L.A.L, she must be heartbroken, and poor Bruce. Deepest sympathies from the Liverpool gang and loads of warm vibes to you Livin' and to your little Bruce.
RIP sweet Selina x

That's exactly what happened to Doughnut. I got up in the morning, no rattling of bars as normal for pellets. Hunched up and didn't want to come out and wouldn't eat. Runny tum and she was also bloated. She had 4 injections, took her home and within an hour or so had perked up and wanted pellets. Took her back the following day, she was OK but still a bit bloated. Had baytril, panacur and fibreplex to give her for a week, just to rule out urine infection and worms. That cost £100.

6 weeks later her poops all small, hardly eating, took her back and referred to a specialist. She wasn't in pain but I didn't want her to get to that stage again. By the following day and staying with the specialists, xrays, bloods, urine tests and another £250 she was fine. Apparently maybe she just didn't fancy what food was on offer so hadn't eaten a lot! I don't give her any veg or fruit but give her bramble leaves, lots of hay, egg cup of SS pellets and also introduced dill which is good for gas and she loves. I've noticed that since I've been putting her outside on the grass, gradually building up her time, she is a lot livelier. She seems to have more exercise outside and this helps her gut too.

Anyway sending some good vibes and hope your bunny gets well quickly like mine did.
