  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

How many dentals has your rabbit had?

Just interested to know the answer to this. Elsa, my lovely nine year old bun is going in for dental number five since last August. When I booked her in for number one I was really nervous as she'd been so ill and is obviously getting on a bit. I would neve have guessed that 8 months later she'd still be going strong and heading for number five! So are there buns out there that have experienced say 10+?

Our Herman is 9 years and has liver problems and he has been having dentals every 6-8 weeks for the past 18 months. he bounces back every time bless him :D

None :) my girls are 2 and my boy is 3 (4 in 2 weeks!), and none have had dentals. My 8 year old bun before them never had one either. It's something I watch out for though, as my boy, Arran, went his first three years not having any hay, but since I adopted him he's become a good hay eater. Still I am wary.

I have a 6 year old rabbit Buttons who has had 9 dentals in the last 18 months, she has a lung problem and has been fine.

Erm, lost count for how many Ginger's had. I could work it out, but i can't be botehred

Every 10 weeks for a while, every 2 weeks for a couple of months, every 16 weeks for the past few months, now down to 10.

Grim has had seven at the last count. He has a lot of problems and even stopped breathing during one dental, but my vet brought him back. Every dental after that he was fine. He's coming up to six now, but so far hasn't needed them too often.

Out of my four bunnies, one. And in retrospect that wasn't really needed, it was more precautionary as Mischa was drinking a lot of water and one of the vets thought they saw a spur. In the end the vet we use the most, who did the dental, said he did a bitof reshaping but there wasn't anything major needing doing.
