  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Following on from my thread in chat my rabbit Roly is at an out of hours vet with very gassy guts but there is no blockage there. Given I've had to advise the vet of all treatment so far what should I advise given an obstruction has now been ruled out by X ray? He is currently recieving fluids via a drip but there is nothing moving through his gut due to the gas.

Infacol, exercise and stomach massages? How much of each should he get?

pain relief (but I'm sure you know that). Zantac maybe? Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along soon..

Do you think perhaps this would be better added to your original thread, which folk have been following?

Apparently he has already had tubing put down into his stomach for the dye Xray but not much gas came out. :(

He's currently stable and comfortable and the nurse has been told to try infacol and stomach massages. I'm worried that moving him will stress him too much at this stage but will be moving Honey to another vet practice on Monday as I don't really anticipate Roly ever coming home.

Apparently the vet has tried using a large needle inserted through the abdomen wall to release the gas, I'm not sure how I feel about this given the stomach is in danger of rupturing.

They have taken him off the fluids and are continuing to give him drugs, I have told them he also needs to be made to exercise and have stomach massages. Not sure there's much else that can be done.
