  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent advise needed - stasis

Hi all

When I got home from work this morning I noticed straight away that there was something wrong with my house bun. She looked very uncomfortable, not happy laying down, very subdued and not interested in any of the food/treats I offered.

I phoned the emergency vet who said to bring her in straight away; vet said that her tummy feels very dense and definite signs of stasis possibly bloat. She gave her 2 injections, can't remember exactly what they are called but I'm pretty sure one was an antibiotic and one was to get the gut moving. We've bought bunny home and are supposed to have syringe fed a liquid recovery food, but we've all ended up wearing more of it than my bun has consumed.

I'm extremely worried as she still looks very uncomfortable and hasn't passed any poos - she's now also getting really stressed out because I keep trying to shove a syringe in her face. I've tried every way I can to syringe but nothing is working.

Shall I keep trying through the night? I'm absolutely dreading what I might find in the morning :(

Has you Rabbit received Pain Relief?

This is an absolute essential so please contact the Vet again to establish exactly what medication was administered and if she is still not eating/pooing now I would ask for her to be admitted for intensive care. This should include fluid therapy (IV or Subcutaneous) and medication via injection. Diagnostics (Bloods/abdominal Xray etc) may also be needed.

Sorry for short reply, two gravely ill Rabbits here myself

I hope your Rabbit will recover quickly.

Hope your rabbit is recovering now.

As Jane says, pain relief is very important. Sometimes meds take a while to kick in - when my rabbit had stasis he had the injections you mention, plus pain relief, but seemed to get worse before he got better.

I'm sorry to hear about your poorly bunny.

How about steaming some of her favourite veg, and pureeing it up. Then carefully and slowly syringe feed her. Sometimes putting some on their front paws may work. Bunnies like to be clean, so this may encourage her to clean herself and also ingest the food.

I understand how stressful this is for you and your bunny, but you have to help her if she is unable to help herself.

Many of us on RU have had to do this and on many occasions.

We're here if you need us.

Best of luck.
