Penis injury?

i think my boys penis has been nipped during bonding, ive taken a photo but forgot about how annoying it is to upload a piccy!!
I've got a vets appointment for 3.15, will he be ok till then?

Theres no blood, he's got white fur around that area so i'd be able to tell. Its just sticking out a little bit and bright red ? its also quite small compared to the pictures i've googled has she bitten it off?? he literally humped her for a split second as i seperated straight away!

Has he been humping her a lot?

Was he doing it the wrong way round?

I would be thinking to get him to the vet as a priority, like right now, to be honest.

no, just a normal amount of humping and mostly the right way round.
He tried the wrong way a couple of times, which i stopped right away but i thought i ought to check him anyway which is when i found it.....
i'll ring them now and take him down :(

It might be he has over exerted himself and made it a bit swollen so it can't retract, but that too does need seeing ASAP.

Please let us know how you get on.

i've spoken to my vets and described it to them, in the last 15mins or so the penis has gone back inside and redness is just visable through the opening.

My vets said to keep an eye over the next 15/30mins and if its swollen or sticking out again to bring him straight down, if not they say he'll be fine till 3.
He doesn't seem to be in any pain and there isn't any blood.....im starting to think i may of been seeing a 'normal' penis erect for the first time?? but it does look rather sore

the more i think about it the more i doubt its been bitten, bun bun didn't nip him at all while they where together and was very tolerant of the humping, and the couple of times he attempted to mount her head i stopped him as quick as humanly possible and he never squeaked or showed any signs of discomfort.

He's not showing any signs of pain and is eating and hopping round normally.

Hopefully he has just over exerted himself then. your vets sound smart and right on with their advice and hopefully when they give him a thorough check they can give you more info on what has happened to him.

As Sky-O said, it does sound as if he's maybe just over exerted himself where he's got very excitable about his new pal...I remember Dudley made his absolutely red raw when he got really frisky when I tried to bond him with my lops a couple of years ago. It's definitely worth taking him to the vets for a check over though, just to be on the safe side. Hopefully it turns out to be nothing :)

well i'm back from the vets, i didn't get to see my normal vet but the one i did see said although it was very red it didn't warrent any anti inflamitory meds and to just keep an eye on it, and rinse with salt water once a day. She said it was probably slightly prolapse from the humping but its gone back in on its own.

She also said she's never seen a rabbits penis like this and its like theres two parts to it but not through injury. She said it was like he was male AND female?!
Could anyone shed any light on this?

She also suggested i give him a week to let the soreness go down before i recommence bonding :( :( so i have a rabbit living in my bathroom for the next week which is really inconvienent :(

Feeling very deflated after starting bonding and now having to put it on pause

having googled split penis, its not that i dont think.

Now it looks like a fairly normal penis but its sooooooo very red still ? two days on now and its still red so it mayy be that his bits are like that??

I've messaged this to Parsnipbun as she's recently had to go through one of her buns having his penis bitten off. If you search her posts you'll be able to see all about it.

I've just had this reply from Parsnipbun...

"I would strongly suggest they find a specialist vet surgeon asap before it heals over. It is essential to ensure that rabbit is peeing and ghat it is not scarring over or leaking inside. Either is a disaster

As ever I recommend our surgeon, Mrs Ford at Cambridge Veterinary Group.

I would add that Parsley acted as though nothing had happened. We almost didnt take him to vet!!!"

thank you for your reply
he's seen a vet already, if it had been bitten off surely she'd of noticed that?? plus wouldn't there of been blood? we are 2 days in im sure i'd of seen something in the way of pain or swelling ?
he's peeing etc and theres no swelling around the area his actual willy is just red ?
i'm pretty sure this isnt an injury, i think there was something wrong with his bits and the humping aggrivated it ??
But now im all worried and confused :?

I hadn't read your update from the vet. sorry. Whether it has been bitten or not, as it's still red now after they've been separated two days it doesn't sound just like aggravation. You need to keep an eye on it and make sure he doesn't stop peeing.

I've been checking it three or four times a day, he's been peeing plenty in the past two days and theres no blood in it.

The thing is the bunny is new to me, i didn't look at his penis before the bonding started so i dont know what 'normal' is for him, or all i know it could of been that red before bonding started/

Its really wierd though, when i retract the sheath it looks bloody but when touched with white cotton wall theres no blood coming off whats so ever, so its his actual penis that is that red? i need to try and get a photo to show everyone.

Hi. Am in research office so this quick and via iphone. My understanding from what happened eith our parsley is that the penis can be crushed out of normal shape by a bite. Rather than being actually cut. This results in it taking on odd shapes and can easily result in blockages of the urine passage. I cannot see any images posted due to restrictions where i am working. You say you have seen a vet. But do you know whether they see a lot of rabbit penises or. Damged ones?? This really is a case for a secialist. Most especially if some remedial work needs doing. Is bun on meracam in case pf swelling? We also gave a urine diuritic once we knew there was through flow to keep the passage open and extra sub cut fluids.

Ps if crushed little or no blood but still life threatening. Can you get your vet to send images to a vet experienced in looking at this sort of damage? Going off line now but rubyted can text me or recommend the usual specialist vets including those of other posters on here andincluding one who dealt with parsley who is in today and could guve advice based pn image if your vet sends. Have they checked bladder is emptying and urine tested?

It needs to be fully emptying. Not straining or leaving any urine in bladder

Pps normally prnis is a sort of light pink grey

thank you for your replies, the penis now looks a normal shape just to clarify when it was stuck out temporarily it looked a little odd but now when you put the sheath back its got no irregularities.

No i doubt my vet see's many injured rabbits penis' (i cant imagine many vets do!) but they are rabbit savvy and i do generally trust them.

He's peeing alot, i dont have any worries that he's not fully emptying his bladder, i changed his litter tray at 5 yesterday evening and by this morning it was soaked through.

I really dont think its an injury, i'm going to try and get some picks later for everyone to see, its just like a normal penis but bright red!
