  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Giving panacur regularly?

I was in p@h yesterday buying some carefresh and I noticed an ad saying you can give panacur regularly (monthly I think It was?) to prevent parasites/worms etc. never seen that mentioned here or by my vet (twickenham vets) so I wasn't sure what to make it of. Any advice?

I do not give Panacur regularly. I treat every Rabbit with a one off 28 day course. I never use Panacur again unless *clinical symptoms and/or Veterinary advice* dictates otherwise.

IMO overuse of Panacur is likely to do more harm than good. My Vets agree with my choice here and I use the same Vets as you xx

I think the manufacturer still recommend 2-4 times a year, so that would only be every 3 months. Whether or not to treat routinely is a hot topic for debate. I currently treat once per year because I've seen how horrible the effects of E.C. can be

I have been told too that 2-4 times a year is recommended. We tend to panacur all of ours about once every 6-8 months. Also whenever we have had new buns in we have pancured them (28 day dose each time)

As with the above I have seen the awful effects of EC. Other RUers here have different ideas and some very rabbit savvy vets also have differing opinions on the use of panacur for EC. In my mind, as I panacur them every 6-8 months and do a bleach out - one part bleach nine parts water every 28 days, I *think* I am reducing the risk of EC. Whether or not that is the case, this belief helps me feel that I am doing all I can so whilst I remain vigilant for EC, it does give me some peace of mind - justified or not.

I would say however that I always check with our vet before we start the panacur, check the weight of the buns and try to coincide the panacur with the six monthly vet checks mine have when having their vaccinations.
