Feel awful but I need to take a break from fostering.

Alibunmum

Wise Old Thumper
Since January last year I have had foster rabbits here constantly - up to five at a time! Last night Barney and Belle, my most recent fosters went to a new home and I have asked for a break before I take more on. Trouble is, I know there its a long waiting list for buns to come to the rescue and now I am letting them down. :(

I have recently changed one of my nerve pain drugs and the new one is draining all my energy. I felt all I was doing was the very basic care for the outside buns and didn't actually work with the fosters the way I normally would to socialise them etc. Maybe I will be used to the tabs soon but I am supposed to double the dose next which I reckon will have me sounds asleep 24/7. :(

Ali, you have helped so many buns, I think it's wonderful. It is not selfish to have a little 'time out' and recharge the batteries!

Remember, you are not superwoman! We all need a wee break now and again! :D

You have to take care of yourself, first and foremost, otherwise you will be no good to anyone. Maybe when you have rebuilt your reserves a little bit you will be able to foster some more but not til you are ready. Fosterers do such an amazing job, but looking after so many buns does take energy, and if you haven't got any to give then nobody can ask any more of you. ((Hugs) Feel better soon.

PS Take heart in knowing how many bunnies you have already helped, and what an amazing job you do for your buns

Everyone needs to recharge every so often. I have been on antidepressants for nerve pain and they seriously mess up your system, I have been unbelievably tired. You need to work on yourself first so you can bounce back with renewed enthusiasm. You have done a great job fostering up to now and will do again when you get yourself sorted :D

You have helped so many rabbits, take some time for yourself and see how you feel after a nice break. Big hugs xxx

You are not letting the Rescue down !! You have already helped them so much. You need to look after yourself too and if that means taking a break from Fostering then I am certain the Rescue will totally understand.

I hope the side effects of the meds wear off soon, they dont sound like much fun

Just keep looking at the long list of those you have already helped! That's a huge achievement. :thumb:

Thank you everyone, your comments are all lovely and I am very grateful for the support. I was the first foster career for Fairly Beloved and have had buns here from the rescue ever since. I am guilty of always wanting to do more when sometimes I really need to sit back and have a rest. Ihave almost convinced myself that if I take in fosters just now both they and my own buns would be neglected to an extent and this is not what I want.

To acknowledge that you need a break means you are actually making sure that you dont let anyone/anyBun down.
Maybe in a few months the new meds will have settled down and you could then review things. Taking a break does not negate all the help you have given so far xx

Aw Ali, you really should not feel guilty about this. You have helped so many buns. Think of it this way, if you dont look after yourself and get yourself back on form you'll never beable to help any more buns, and your own wont get your full energy.

Take care of yourself and enjoy a well deserved break xxx

(((HUGS)))

I agree with what everybody has already said.

Sending you a huge hug and load of good wishes.

You are an absolute saint in all ways.

What Jane said all the way :)

You are doing a good thing by doing this. If and when the time is right and you want to start fostering again, then that will be a good thing too. :)

It's just whatever is best for you.

'You can only help others if you help yourself first'. x

Thank you so much everyone, you have all really helped me get this into perspective. Hopefully it won't be for too long and I can concentrate on my buns in the meantime.

Ali,

Just found this post - as you know we don't get on to the forums very much.

But HAD to agree with everyone else. You've been an absolutely excellent asset to our team, and helped us out in so many ways. I know you're break from fostering didn't last long either, but as we've always said you're more than expected to take breaks when you need them. You need to look after yourself before worrying about the rabbits (And this is a case of do as I say, not as I do!).

Excellent to have you back fostering just now, but ANYTIME you need a break again, you just let us know and don't go thinking you're letting us down or anything like that!!

David

Thanks David, I really appreciate it. How on earth you two manage as well as working full time I don't know. Glad I was back part of the team so soon though, otherwise I would have missed the gorgeous bunch who are in the kitchen just now!
