  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Poor eyesight in one eye shouldn't affect her too much, they can still have a very happy life.

Do you know what caused it? Is it being treated so it doesn't affect the other eye?

I don't know what caused it.

I took her to the vet today, and he said it is a common thing with rabbits.
He also said that they very very rarely operate on an animals cataract, and that rabbits cope surprising well with them.

He didn't say anything about treatment or further prevention.

My Eddie had cataracts in both eyes when he was elderly. The vet reckoned he could see light and shape but not much else.

It didn't seem to affect him too much, we were just a lot more careful when approaching him. Lily on here's Louie is fully blind in both eyes and still gets up to loads of mischief!

noserubs for bunny.

I'm no expert but catacts can be caused by E.C. so a full course treatment with Panacur (or Lapizole) along with proper disinfectant of her environment might be needed. It won't reverse the damage but might help stop her from losing her sight in the other eye.
Personally I would get an E.C. test done and if positive continue with regular Panacur treatment.

She is young to have a cataract so I too would get her tested for EC.

My elderly bunny (9) has just been diagnosed with a cataract in his left eye and he is coping well. I just make sure that I speak as I approach him and make sure I put food and water in the usual place so he knows where it is.

I know someone who has a completely blind bunny and he copes very well.
