  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

New foster and 3 day old kits - mom has yucky eye

The rescue bun that I'm caring for had kits 3 days ago. She is eating and drinking well and the kits are very energetic, which is great. Unfortunately, her eyes are very runny. One eye appears to just have clear fluid running out while the other now has a blob of thick, whitish muck beneath it. It's 11:00pm here and so bunny vets on anywhere. :(
I have antibiotic drops, I just wonder if they are okay for a mom to have. I have Optimyxin Plus which is described as Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Gramicidin Ophthalmis Solution USP. Gosh, that's a lot to say!

They aren't too bad, but she does need to see a vet. I called my bunny vet who said there is a risk of stressing momma rabbit by taking her in. I don't want her to stop feeding her kits!
I am going to take photos in to show the vet tomorrow when I take my others for their appointments, and see if she thinks we should hold off a bit longer until momma is a bit more settled. She is a domestic bun that was born wild, so the situation is even more stressful for her than your average bun.
