  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

For all of you that keep other animals as well bunnies

I thought I would just post this, as it happened to Twinkle who is our house rabbit. You may remember that last week I posted that he had one runny eye. Well the cause turned out to be the tiniest 'tick' no bigger that a pin head which had attached to his eyelid right in the corner -it was so tiny barely noticeable. Twinkle hasn't been outside during the winter, but the dog obviously has, in the woods and long grass and we can only imagine that she brought this nasty little thing into the house and it somehow ended up on Twinkle. The tick had now been removed but the eye is still being treated.

Just wanted to make you all aware of this if you hadn't come across it before. Particularly, as it was so very small and hardly detectable.

Thanks. That is something to be aware of that I don't normally think of. People can also carry in ticks in the cuffs or folds of clothing and not realize it.

I think what surprised us the most with this is, that the 'tick' was so very tiny and would have probably gone un-noticed for some time if it had gone deep into the fur. It was just that it had attached to the eyelid and the eye weeping was the first sign we had that something was wrong. Having said that, even now the 'tick' has been removed Twinkle's eye is still weeping, which may mean another trip to the vet. Ticks are horrible things!

Good idea for a thread. Islay got a tick last year, it was right in her mane and an absolute nightmare to get out. Thankfully, it didn't cause her any harm.
