So Im another one, with a bunny with gut stasis but...shes been on everything possible since sat night and completely in vet care, she has a drip with fluids and metaclop, metacam, fibreplex, zantac, critical care etc and I had to pick her up to transfer her to my normal vets today (she was in an out of hours vets) which I did early this afternoon - they are keeping her in and since 2pm - shes not eaten and not pooed - I cant believe how long its taking her....is there any other explanation?? Ive asked if they could check her teeth although she was absolutely fine sat morning then very downhill by the afternoon....Im just so so worried  x (PS my normal vets is an exotic vets)

I know my vet recommend that Fluffy came home after 36 hours of been at the vets so that she could recover in familiar surroundings although she had eaten and pooped at the vets

Have any diagnostics been run- abdominal xray/ultrasound, blood profiles ??

What is her general demeanour like ?

Hi Jane, thank you. They said they would monitor her overnight and look at doing bloods etc in the morning, they said she took the critical care well after I dropped her off and she was hopping around a little bit and trying to rip her collar off when the vet was examining her, she also bit through her drip just before I picked her up also (even with the collar on) - Im annoyed as the first vets said they would do blood anyway but clearly didnt, thankfully shes at the proper vets now... (the other vets was on the answer phone for my specialist vets who dont do emergency so I had no choice).....the thing is it said on her notes she had passed faeces but I dont know - they fed me a line to get rid of her today so I dont trust what they put! I just cant believe theres been nothing else this afternoon! esp if she should be getting better......

Could they try removing the collar. Stress alone can exacerbate gut problems and having a collar on must be ultra stressful. My Vet never uses them on Rabbits.

I was worried about the stress factor as shes a very independant bunny wont think twice about giving me a right old nip if I dare to get in her way etc! so I imagine this is her hell.....I guess they had no choice? how do your vets stop them pulling out the drip in the ear? Be useful to know....I think they werent putting her on any more fluids tonight which would mean they could take it off hopefully? - unfort they are closed now so I just have to wait until morning  thanks for your help.....thanks Dave81 too its all v much appreciated x

Hi Caroline, sorry to hear about one of your bunnies. No further advice but hope she is feeling better soon.

Sounds like she had all the meds at the emergency vets - was it Chester Gates?

Mine have never had a collar on either (even though Homer was biting through the line  )

It might be an idea to bring her home tomorrow morning if she is well enough as I also find that in their own environment they can pick up (as Dave81 also says). Do you have some critical care in (Oxbow), we have found that to be the best stuff to syringe but most of the time it is taken willingly by Homer after a GA.

Hi Sandra,
Yes it was chester gates I spoke with 4 vets in that short time, the one this afternoon fed me a pile of rubbish was v annoyed! the nurses were lovely and the other vets seemed lovely. Anyhow, the thing is whats well enough? Hazel having no interest in food is just so not right well I guess thats the same for every bunny....I just cant believe shes barely eaten. (Im a bit worried about her coming back also I read years ago that bunnies forget each other!) I have critical care in, and Im at home tomorrow but I cannot cancel my work wed to fri which is the worst thing! Im praying she'll pick up - my boyfriend is here but wouldnt be able to syringe feed her so Ill keep my fingers crossed shell be better tomorrow and have passed poos! I just want her to be at home Ive never had an animal be in the vets this long! Its awful

Homer went in for 3-4 days when he stopped eating, him and Katy didn't forget each other. You just have to be careful when you bring them home as they may smell different but if you have a blanket try rubbing that over to get the "usual" smell back.

I also found that when we bring Homer home and he won't eat, if we put Katy with him and she starts eating he tends to want to eat too. With the critical care I find that Homer likes to eat it off a spoon sometimes rather than a syringe. I also mix it with tepid water so it is a little warmer on his tum.

The nurses at Chester Gates are brilliant and they do look after them 24 hours very well in there and check at least once per hour. I am not sure which vets they have there now as my vet left last year.

I hope she picks up overnight and can come home tomorrow.

You could also take in some herbs etc to try her with. I normally buy anything and everything but sometimes the stronger smelling ones can do the trick e.g. thyme to start them eating.

If you send Lea-anne a photo she might be able to do some distance Reiki for you (you met her at the Thai)

When my buns have had stasis/bloat the first thing they start eating is dried food - something like plantain or dandelion.. might be worth trying some of this to tempt them if you have some in.

Just to put your mind at rest one of my buns was in the vets for 3 days/nights before we could have him home and with a careful reintroduction everything was fine on the bond front.

Hope your bun is feeling better soon x

Thanks so much both, that does put my mind at rest, it was 3 nights last night and were going into the third day. I am just hoping all will be well this morning I have an entire hour to wait until I can call!! I cant wait to have her home holly looks so loney! (but actually doesnt seem at all bothered!) I just cant believe she didnt want a fenugreek treat yesterday! she normally can smell them wrapped up in my pocket and will stop at nothing to get to them! fingers crossed xxx

Shes still not pooed all night they think she has a blockage they are very concerned - they are going to xray her and take a blood test immediately and get the results back today and they will have to operate if its a blockage I just cant believe it this is just awful

I am sorry

I really hope she can pull through xx

He thinks he can see a fur ball on the xray but wants a second opinion on the best option, if we should operate or not from the other vet at the practice, he also wants the blood results back, they should be back in half an hour.
I started to panic it was something theyd eaten in the garden and have found out ivy is highly poisionous! Ive seen one of them eat it! but not Hazel - Im so cross with myself I hope that didnt start this whole thing off but we moved 4 months ago and the others are fine thank god....

Hi Caroline, sending her lots of vibes.

Katy had a bloackage a few years ago and managed to pull through it. It did take about a week thought. We were just about to have her operated on but it started to move.

You have good vets so I am sure they are doing everything.

Hugs to you. x

Hi Sandra, Hmmm ok so Katie wasnt eating or pooing for that time? The slightly good news is shes passed 2 poo pellets but thats it. He said he wants to give it a couple of hours now before taking any other decisions, apparently shes still bright so there is hope? I think..... they dont want to keep syringing her if its not coming out the other end......thank you for he good wishes your post has given me hope.... xxx

I would ask the Vet if he would consider giving her Lactulose, an osmotic laxative that draws water *into* the impacted matter. Unlike something such as liquid paraffin it does not coat the impaction in oil (which would be counterproductive) but rather aids rehydration of the impaction. So good ongoing fluid therapy is also needed too. As Gut Stasis can compromise liver function Lactulose can also be of benefit as it can mop up toxins that a compromised liver may not be coping with.

If your Vet does not stock Lactulose then it can be easily obtained OTC at any pharmacy.

Sending lots of vibes that the blockage starts to break up and can make its own way out! Stasis is evil and so stressful!
