  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My rabbit has a suspected ball of fur in stomach help urgent?

Snowy1997

My rabbit has been seen by a vet and they are not sure what to do. He may have a ball of fur as seen on x ray. What can we do to help him please.

Okay, you need to find a rabbit savvy vet in your area, urgently. An obstruction is very serious in any rabbit.

He will need fluids, subcutaneously (under the skin) to help hydrate his gut and pain relief. I can't push the pain relief enough, it'll be really badly hurting him.

I'll pop up a thread to get further attention for you.

Loads of vibes :(

pineapple juice might help

Its good at breaking down fur as its really acidy, I give it to my lionhead when he is moulting!

but i agree with graham! get him properly vet checked

If the vet isn't sure, find another vet! Suggest you start a new thread on rabbit chat saying rabbit-savvy vet needed in xx. It really is an emergency :(

You need to have a bunny savvy vet. If you don't have a bunny savvy vet please find one as this is a very serious condition. Do not force feed if it is suspected blockage.

Fluids are the most important thing for blockages. Sometimes getting your bunny to move around gently can help to get things moving but do not do this if your bun is showing discomfort or is stressing it out.

Pineapple (fresh) is rumoured to help break down hair due to the enzymes in it but there is no proof but I tend to give it during a moult just in case. I buy a fresh pineapple and then squeez it (by hand) and put some into a syringe and give my bunnies it like this - they may lap it up but never tried.

I also meant to say that if you offer your bunny water in a bowl with a dash of boiling in to make it "tepid" it can encourage more drinking. I find mine drink more when it is fresh and tepid like this.

Hi, I am sorry you have a problem with your bunny, I see you are in Hampshire, there is a fabulous Rabbit Specialist in Hampshire called John Chitty, if you can get to him then he will help you, would you like his details?

I hope you were able to contact John Chitty (as in Snowy's post) and that he was able to help.
