Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

The vet just phoned with Little Ted's blood test results

The tests haven't shown any underlying condition :D He had slightly elevated muscle enzymes which he said could be as a result of him not eating and his system breaking down his muscles for energy (surprised it would happen that quick though). So, maybe it was just the stress of the bonding situation that has caused this second bout? Anyway he's asked us to take him back to be checked over in 10 days (fingers crossed we'll have no need of them in the meantime).

Yayyyy! Teddy!! Now come on little lad - get better, get stronger and we'll look forward to some piccies of you real soon xx

Thanks all, Ted's eating pretty much normally now thank goodness, loads of hay and lovely poos. Last time it took several days for his poos to go back to normal so hopefully he's well on the way to recovery now :D

So glad his bloods are normal, that must be a huge relief to know theres no underlying issue :D

Loads of vibes that little Ted continues to make a good recovery xxxx

Very glad to hear Little Teds bloods are ok :D

Out of curiosity (just in case Daisy needs it done) how do they take the blood, where from and is it painful or very stressful for them? How much did it cost or does that depend on the analyses they are doing?

Thanks :D so are we! They took the blood from his ear, shaved a patch which didn't bother him then put some numbing cream on so he wouldn't feel the needle going in. I wasn't actually there when they took it so I'm not sure if it bothered him but I think once it's numbed it wouldn't have done. We haven't been sent the breakdown of the bill yet so I'm afraid I don't know how much it was, I think it probably does depend on what they're testing for and if they can do it in house or not. Ted's had to be sent off to an external lab so I would think that might make it a bit more expensive. I suppost you could always ring your vet for a ball park figure then at least you'd have a rough idea. Hope Daisy doesn't need it! When I get the breakdown (we usually get it wtih the confirmation they've sent the claim form in) I will try and remember to come back and tell you!

Thank you! The anaesthetic cream for the ear sounds good :thumb: If we go down the road of further investigations I will take her to a specialist and they do the bloods in house! I was just curious on the cost Daisy is insured and I have a special bunny account as well so we're safely covered plus I'd remortgage the house for my babies :D

I hope Little Ted is still doing well and enjoying his new foods! if mine could choose one green veg only it would be their beloved Parsley :D that will be the first thing that gets sown in the new bunny garden!!

When the vet did a blood test on my late bunny two weeks ago I was there and he did not shave the ear or put any cream on it they just held bunny who was very good anyway but he did have trouble getting blood from her ( with me staring at the floor willing myself not to faint!) but got it at the 3rd attempt.

He did kidney tests I think but certainly there were about 10 different results when they came back and it cost me £38 for the bloods.

Im sorry for your recent loss :(

It's always good to know what different vets do so that you can query what your own vet is doing and sometimes suggest a proceedure you would prefer. I assumed it would be in the region of £50 but was curious as you never can tell when it comes to vet fees!

Sorry for your loss Bunkin :cry::cry:

I think £38 sounds quite cheap, I'm definitely expecting it to be more when I get the breakdown (I think our vets are quite expensive though). The total bill so far for Ted's stasis this last month is £1713 :shock::shock: and we're same as you, we'd sell anything but I'm glad we don't have to! I have to say I was pleased about the shaving and the numbing, I just think it sounds a) easier to see the vein and b) less uncomfortable, so at least you know it's a possibility if they don't seem to do it as a matter of course.

I'm glad I didn't see them doing the test as I'm not keen on blood or needles either. When he had the drip in his ear some of his blood had come out into the tube and it made me feel a bit queasy :oops::oops:

Ted seems really well at the moment :D, we are still on with his meds but they should stop over the next couple of days. I have just been asking on the diet thread how slowly we need to introduce new foods seeing as he can only occasionally have what he had every day before.

My vets are relatively cheap but have not had an in treatment so don't know what they would charge for that. I assume you have pet insurance.
I enquired for remaining bunny and cheapest is £10 per month with £75 excess and was wondering if it was worth it but after reading your post maybe it is!!!!!!!

Yes thankfully we do have insurance, it's with Petplan and our excess is £55. We can claim £2000 per condition per policy year, then we have to cover the bills. We'd have been a bit lost without it though we would genuinely sell whatever we needed to pay the bills. I have to say Petplan have been excellent so far, they have always settled claims really quickly (cheque comes in about a week). We pay £11.06 a month for Ted and £12.06 a month for Rosie (we get a discount for Ted as second bunny), I'd never be without it now.
