  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Wormers

I've decided I'd like to worm the rabbits, I spoke to the vet about it and got a leaflet about panacur for rabbits. Is this a good wormer to use? Also will a 5g tube be enough for my 2 bunnies? (Izzy weighs 1.9kg and Archie weighs 2.5kg)

There are two products, Panacur and Lapizole but they both contain the same thing.

One panacur syringe would be enough for two rabbits for 9 days but you won't have any spare doses if some ends up on the floor or they spit it out. I would get two syringes and if you don't need to use the second you can just save it for next time.

I think this is the cheapest place at the moment: http://www.animeddirect.co.uk/small-animals/worming

Bear in mind that lapizole is much easier to give to bunnies because it is liquid and is just the same as pancur though normally marginally more expensive. Depends how well behaved your bun is or how creative he is about dribbling his meds back out!

Personally, I prefer to buy Panacur 10% liquid as you only need to give 0.2ml per kg of bun. I find it a very cost effective way to worm (it's about £14 for a 100ml bottle) and it's a tiny amount of fluid that you need to get into a wriggly bunny!
