  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

pasturella advice

Mama Doe
can anyone whos experienced this illness give me any advice on how i can help my little man. thanks

What treatment has he had?
What diagnostics has a vet performed?
When did it start?
What are the symptoms you are seeing?

hes currently on baytril twice daily and eye cream twice daily.after explaining honeys symptoms she agrees she also had pasturella so going from that she says buzz has it.at the minute he only has runny eyes, chest clear and nose not runny.only had a runny eye for afew days

The next step would be diagnostics then, so an xray to rule out overgrown tooth roots and a culture and sensitivity test to determine what exact bacteria is causing the snuffles - its not always pasturella - and which antibiotic it is sensitive to. I believe the C&S test cant be done whilst he is on antibiotics though.

Doesnt sound bad at the moment which is good. You'll be wanting to bathe his eyes to stop them getting sore or crusty. You might want to ask your vet about bisolvon which can help thin the mucus so it drains easier if it gets much worse.

At this point in time, with it only being a few days I would continue with the course of baytril for at least two weeks. If it seems to go keep an eye on things and treat if it pops up again.

If the baytril doesn't work then you can try other antibiotics and combinations of antibiotics.

Have you had x rays done to eliminate tooth root issues?

Try to eliminate dust and stress. This is very important as stress is often a trigger for snuffles.

x rays werent even mentioned?:? i want to do my upmost best for him as he is my special dude.and if it means traveling a distance for him to go to an even better vet i will.iv brought him inside so i can keep a closer eye on him

Be careful with temperature changes, they can set off snuffles.

I think Breeze recently lost her rabbits partner to similar symptons which is why the vet is perhaps not considering teeth etc.

(Very sorry if I'm wrong here Breeze x)

Snuffles is such a widely used word with rabbits, a single sneeze and people seem to call it 'snuffles', so it can often become misuded. Pasteurella (in one of its forms) can cause what you are describing, but i'd want to rule other things, such as teeth out first, as with a runny eye, as the sole symptom, i certainly wouldn't say 'snuffles' from the off. It's not as contagious (in our vets opinion) as some make it out to be. Eg, Biscuit has been living with Ginger for over 18 months now and hasn't shown any symptoms and she is very much pasteurella active.

Stress, as previously mentioned is one of the largest triggers for it, so you need to keep buzz's environment as stress free as possible.

Xrays are the only way to diagnose tooth root issues, so maybe that would be worth checking out, but right now, i'd keep on the baytril (what dose are you giving twice daily and how much does buzz weigh?) for a good couple of weeks minimum just in case, and monitor and proceed from there.

From the very little information we have, i can't see that this is pasteurella based, but obviously only your vet can confirm that.

Sending vibes for your little man.
