  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Ring worm!

Well this was a surprise this morning, I went to the nurse as I've a strange 'rash' on my tummy area and she could have knocked me down with a feather when she said ring worm!! I know it's only a fungus but she said I could have got it from my bunnies!! I was mortified, as they are always imaculate in every way! I work really hard to keep them and their area really clean. Is there anything I should put on them or give them, could they be at risk at all?? All bunnies are fine, not loosing fur or anything like that. I'm more worried for them than me at the moment. Any advice would be great :D

Ringworm is not easy to treat in rabbits. Some animals having ringworm don't even show any signs of it. Maybe you've been in contact with other animals (cats, dogs) and got it from them? The best thing you can do right now is to get treated yourself, because your rabbits can easily get it from you. Rabbits that have ringworm are usually treated with miconazole I think. My rabbit was suspected to have ringworm and our vet prescribed us Imaverol, but she's okay right now and I don't think she had it, because none of our family members got it.

Could you take them to the vets to get them checked for it? I had ringworm once before I got my rabbits, but did have other pets. However none of them were effected so I must have caught it from somewhere else, this could also be the case with you?

I had ringworm - and so did my OH, my cats and my dog - caught from a newly arrived rescue kitten from a less than ideal rescue centre. I had the rash on my face...

Be scrupulous with your hygiene - I used industrial quantities of prescribed iodine wash (Betadine 4%) and Betadine lotion (10%) which I applied to the rash before applying a steroid cream. I even had to wash my hair with the Betadine 4% and all washing had to be done with either a washing powder that included a bleach or at 60°C.

It was a joyous 4 weeks. Good luck. ;)

you can use the daktarin athletes foot spray as that will get rid and so will the daktarin cream

I've had ringworm a few times now, first time I didn't know what it was and was trying all sorts of antihistamines which didn't work at all and eventually it faded away itself. Next time I knew what it was and I used daktarin on it (Drs recommendation) and it was gone in no time :thumb:
