  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

small pinkish patch showing on Spenser's foot

Wise Old Thumper
He has had a couple of thumping episodes lately - could this have caused the fur on his back paw to wear down? It is just a tiny circle, and still has a little fur on it. I will be keeping an eye on it. The other possibility that crossed my mind was over-grooming.

Quite a few of my bunnies have these, it seems to be a callous of hardened skin which, as long as it is light pink, is ok. Definitely keep an eye on it though to see if it changes at all. Wherever he likes to rest most try and give him something soft that his claws can sink into which will help alleviate the pressure on the back of his foot.

Thanks, I think I remember you telling me this when he had one before. He was outside then, or in the conservatory where the flooring is hard. He has taken to spending some time on towels rather than his various fleece mats (which he does still use), maybe they are a bit rough for him.

I found fleece or cotton to be the best for Mini. Even just cotton sheets helped. She's fine on lino as long as she has some soft area to sleep and rest on. I have some fleeces from Tracy on here and some i made myself from an old dressing gown, also currently have some fleece material down which I intend on making a long 'runner' blanket from once I can get to my sewing machine  And cheap duvets, they work well too.

She still has the pink bit on her hock but it doesn't get any worse. :thumb:
