The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Drooling rabbit...advice please :-(

New Kit
Hi

My rabbit seemed fine last night but today he has hardly moved and is drooling quite a lot..wet under his chin and where he has been sat. Have given him some metacam and he has eaten a small amount. Do you think it is a dental prob? He is a 6 yr old mini lop, he has never had dental probs but his mum, his sister and his brother did.

Sods law these things happen at weekends! :(

Any advice most welcome.

Thanks.

Dental problems do spring to mind, especially as he has a family history of dental problems, as they can be genetic I believe.

Dental problems can occur at any stage in a rabbits life, and they symptoms you describe do sound most likely to be dental.
Is bun managing to eat and drink?

Hi

Not sure about drinking, he's not a big drinker anyway but he has eaten a bit of carrot top and a few small pieces of digestive biscuit. Sods law it would happen at a weekend, he was acting normally last night. Don't know if I need to take him to the emergency vets tomorrow or if he will be ok till monday morning? Its always difficult knowing when to take them to the vets. As I said we gave him some metacam earlier so hopefully thats helped if he has pain. :?

Try soft food like pellets soaked in water (if he eats pellets). It does sound like a dental problem but you need to make sure he's eating or you'll have a lot of other problems. Ring the emergency vet (although some vets are open on Sundays) they might advise you just to give a higher or regular dose of painkillers until Monday when they can bring him in and operate.

If he does stop eating he needs to see a vet immediately as that could lead to stasis etc and he will go downhill very quickly.

Hi

Thank you for your reply. I will see what he is like tomorrow morning and if he isnt eating then I will take him in otherwise ring for advise as I doubt the bunny vet will be in till monday so they prob wouldn't do a lot tomorrow. I understand if he does stop eating I need to take him asap as he's had gi statis prev a long time ago. I'm not having much luck my other bunny died of an oral sarcoma last Dec and my new bun that I'm yet to bond with him is due to be spayed on mon at a different vets.

p.s. vets in closed now till monday am but emergency vet there 24 hrs as had to take my sisters bun a while ago out of hours they give you a hefty bill but i'm bothered bout that. They just 1 general vet covering.

Having a rabbit specialist vet do the operation (if it's needed) is probably worth waiting for, if he can.
If he eats pellets then just put some in a cup and fill it with water to the level of the pellets. Leave them for five minutes and they should soften up. That would be easier for him to eat if his mouth hurts.
If he doesn't have pellets you could try him with a little porridge made with water.

I'd still ring the vets and ask for advice.
