  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

hi i took my rabbit to the vetr she wasnt eating well ,,, she had a toothe done as we thought it was that ,, but she has lost a real lot of weight over the last week or 2 i feel all her bones ,, she only eats little bits,,, im wondering if it could be that she is eating the oak leaves and oak twiggs in the garden ... i love her so much and its upsetting me ,
please advise

Have you been back to the vets? Has she had diagnostics done? Is she on any meds?

As far as I know, oak is toxic to bunnies (but you will need to check that) so you need to ensure she doesn't eat anymore.

my vet didnt say nothing about oak leaves or twiggs ,,, she is lively ,, drinking well, not eating good, alert ,, what do you mean toxic ???

Ingesting large quantities of Oak Leaves can cause Kidney Damage and gastroenteritis.

You need to take your Rabbit back to the Vet and discuss getting some diagnostics run, I'd suggest a Full Blood profile in the first instance.

Meanwhile do not allow her to eat any more Oak Leaves.

You probably need to take her back to the vets if she's losing so much weight. Apart from the oak what does she eat?

There are several things that can cause weight loss.

Really she needs to see a vet who will tackle the problem by running some diagnostic tests.

Is she neutered? Cancer is a very very high risk in unneuetered females and may cause weight loss - but there are several other things that could be the problem.

In the meantime please do not let her eat more oak leaves. Does she get a lot of hay to eat? It may be that she is craving fibre so make sure she has a really good selection of high quality hay (not the rubbish stuff from the supermarkets).

shi is neutered yes ,,, and she used to love her hay and now she wont eat it ,, she has just russell rabbit ,,, and the vet gave me some fibreplex she wont have it at all

it is possible that the dental op she had did not entirely tackle the teeth issues - this can happen - especially if a vet does not do a lot of dentals on rabbits.

Do you know if your vet is a specialist in rabbits or sees a lot of them?

There are several other options as to why she could be loosing weight - and mostly these need blood testst to rue out (kidney problems for example), but the fact that she does not want her hay anymore may suggest a continuing mouth issue.
