  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

help please!

New Kit
hi i was wondering if anyone can give me advice on the situation my bunny has got himself into as im really quite worried :[
basically it started about a month and half ago my mum got a new baby boy bunny called sweep (rusty attacked him straight away so they havent been let out together since)and rusty (my 15 month old mini lop) stopped eating his food i took him to the vets and he was given the injection for g.i stasis and i took him home all seemed fine but he wont touch his nuggets (hes been on burgess excel nuggets since he was 6 weeks old) so i gave him some of the muesli mix my mum had for the new bunny ( i know its **** but its all he would eat) to see if he would just eat something as at the time it was better than nothing and it worked but he would only eat half of the amount he ate before he got ill so wasnt putting any weight back on and seemed to be losing it he has also dramatically reduced the amount he drinks and his droppings have become small very dark and rock solid so i took him back to the vets rather concerned i explained everything about his eating and drinking habits the vet listened to his tummy said there was some movement there and sent me home with the oral version of the injection he was given previously and told me to give him 2ml twice a day which i have done for the last week (last dose earlier this evening) he seems to have started eating a little bit more over the last few days (still not the same as before) and he will eat veggies but he doesnt seem to be eating enough hay (for my liking anyway) i havent physically seen him drink anything of his own accord for about 3 weeks i have been giving him 1ml of water after every medicine time just because i want him to get some fluids and tonight i bought some pineapple juice as i was told that its good for getting them over an episode of g.i stasis and helps the digestive system get back on track im just wondering if anyone has any other suggestions to helping him get back to normal ( his behaviour hasnt changed he will still run around the garden with my female bunny and do everything as before just his eating and drinking thats changed ) thanks :]

Did the vet examine his teeth? Give him a full all over checkover?

Stasis itself is a symptom of a problem so have they identified the primary cause for his issues?

well thats the thing because hes a mini lop ive always expected problems to arise with his teeth and ive always asked them to be checked when he goes for his health checks and they've always told me they are fine BUT since he was about 12 weeks old he has suffered with on off episodes of runny eyes and sometimes a runny nose he was taken to the vets and they told me they thought it was snuffles but never carried out any tests just sent me away with a month and a halfs worth of baytril whilst on the baytril it cleared but 2 months after it came back and ever since every 3-4 months he will have a flare up and i bathe his eyes and after a week or so it clears but still everytime he goes to the vets i have them check his teeth and ive asked about the runny eyes/nose and was told it may just be an allergy to something as it isnt a constant thing, so when he went to the vets last week she looked at his teeth and said that his bottom teeth on one side are a little bit longer than she expected but the top set are a little bit shorter as if compensating for the bottom set they arent overlapping or anything like that the vet then told me he may need a dental at some point and when i asked her bout the runny eyes/nose she said he may just need his tearducts flushing but to try the oral version of the injection to see if he would pick up his original eating habits before sorting his teeth and runny eyes/nose :/

I think you need to seek the opinion of a more Rabbit Savvy Vet

Unless the primary cause of the GI Stasis is identified (all your Rabbit's symptoms point to a Dental issue) then things are unlikely to improve.

Ive tried to find a rabbit specialist before but ive never been successful the closest i could find on the net was in manchester which is a good 20-30 miles away and i dont have any means of getting him there does anyone know of any in or as close to barnsley south yorkshire as possible as i dont think taking him on a train or bus is an option (not sure if they would even let him on lol ) i just want to get him sorted out ive also been told that the new bunny could have set of the g.i stasis from him being stressed out is that an option? He does seem to be picking up a lil bit his appetite as increased and his droppings are slightly bigger but hes still not drinking as much as i would like him to is there anything that i could use to encourage him to drink more? thankyou

It would be worthwhile starting a new thread called 'looking for a rabbit savvy vet in/near Barnsley please'. Also, on here is 'Barnsley Animal Rescue' and they might be worthwhile contacting because they might know. I don't know what screen name they use though. Ack, my brain has failed me! Sorry :(

Thanks everyone i will ring them up and ask them who they use , it definetely needs sorting properly im just wasting my money at the vets i use now always thought he had dodgy teeth but was always told they were perfect until last week really annoyed as this could have been sorted over a year ago .
