  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi everyone,

I have Lola who is around 12 weeks old, I am taking her to the Vet tomorrow for her VHD and myxi jabs.

I just wondered if there is anything in particular that I should ask her when I see her? Just about general health or anything else!!

Would appreciate some advice if you have any tips!

Thanks!

Good luck at the vets :)

Your vet will only be able to administer one vaccine tomorrow- normally the Myxomatosis one. You will have to take her back in two weeks for the VHD one.

It will be worthwhile discussing which VHD vaccine they give. You want them to either give The Anivac one or the Lapinject one. If they say Cylap, then ask them to order one of the others in for you. Anivac comes in single dose vials.

You can also ask for a gender chat and discuss spaying/neutering (when they will do it, their procedures, if they send home Metacam for the says after, etc).

Also a dental check is always sensible too :)

Some vets will administer both vaccinations a the same time. My vet does (providing the owner is happy to do so) and he's quite highly regarded and is one of the rabbit/guinea pig specialists in the area. Definitely avoid cyclap though as it is known to cause bad reactions in some bunnies.

Gender check, weight, teeth and ears should all be checked. Also a little listen to their heart and breathing.

Hope all goes well x

The vaccine guidance from the companies definitely states the vaccines are to be done 2 weeks apart.

This is because neither company will do tests to see what or if there are reactions to both together. But a new company has done just this and a new combined vaccine is being released soon which we all know about!!:wave:

As I understand it, the new vaccine is formed and works in a different way from both indiidual vaccinations.

Im not saying its the old vaccines combined...Im just saying that the old companies wouldnt combine them to see if it would work....but a new company had done something that seems to enable somethings to be given at the same time.
Im not too good at explaining....
