Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Signs and Indicators of a Gassy Bunny

What are the signs and indicators of a gassy bunny? How do you tell if he/she is gassy?

My bunnies are young and healthy. Eat plenty of hay and exercise tons, but I would like to know in case something happens or if I feed them some greens that may upset their tummies.

I don't know as I have never experienced a bun with a gassy tummy, but noticed this was unanswered so maybe someone else will come along soon with something.

Restlessness, pressing tummy to floor, not eating, reduced fecal output/no fecal output, ears feel cold to touch, tooth grinding (indicating severe pain)

On abdominal examination gas pockets can be felt in the intestines

If the stomach (just below ribcage) feels distended this is an absolute emergency and life saving Veterinary attention is ALWAYS needed.

Same as what Jane said above. But I wanted to add that some buns don't tooth grind when in pain - tho the vast majority do. My Beatrix who has suffered from a gassy tummy reacts by her whole body shaking really fast. She will show she is in great discomfort by continually moving around trying to get in a comfy position and pressing her tummy to the floor. But the shaking is what warns me straight away sometimes before the other signs.
