  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Front Shoulder/Leg Break Possible Amputation

AmandaJ87

Young Bun
Our poor little Binky (mini lop) has broken her front Shoulder/leg whilst jumping around. The vet has mentioned there is a large possibility of nerve damage and there is also a separate fragment. The vet has told me that the will ring a more specialist vet to discuss and costings for fitting a plate. However they would steer towards amputation as they do think there is nerve damage and it would be a quicker procedure as the plate would take 6 weeks to even determine if it has helped.

It really is heart breaking and she is only three months old, she is our first pet and we are torn and all we really want is to just do what is right by our little rabbit. If possible I'd quick like some words of wisdom/advice if this has happened to you or a rabbit that you have known.

Thank you.

I can't offer any advice I'm afraid, but it sounds like your vet is knowledgeable - and is also seeking advice from a more specialist vet which is reassuring.

Whichever way you decide to go with it, I hope she is on the mend soon x

Problems with nerve damage is you can never tell how bad it is completely. Some nerve damage can take weeks and months to heal, while others will never heal completely. I would listen you your vets advice, sounds like there on the ball and talking to a specialist. See what thet say.

I have a Rabbit who sustained a compound fracture of his hind leg. He had the limb amputated and he copes very well. I also used to have a Rabbit with just one front leg, her mother over groomed her when she was newborn and removed the leg. She lived a very 'normal' happy life for almost 10 years.

So if amputation is suggested in preference to the much more complex procedure of inserting a plate, with no guarantee of success, then I would not hesitate in going ahead with it. The recovery is usually remarkably fast, Harry was up and about in less than 24 hours.

Im so sorry to hear your little bun is not well.
I can't add anything about nerve damage but I have a tripod girl, she's missing her front left leg and shoulder, it is a birth defect so she's never known any different but she copes so well & she can run, jump & has a perfectly normal life. They cope so well, usually allot better than we ever think they will.

Best wishes & big hugs

I am so sorry your bunny had a nasty accident.

Well done for seeking advice from what sounds like a good vet and of course for coming on here to seek further advice. There are some very rabbit savvy people on here.

I really wish you and your injured bunny all the luck in the world xxx

Thank you all for your kind words. We went with the advice and little Binky is having her operation tomorrow to remove her leg.

The vets have told us that we won't have to make that many changes, is there anything from your experiences that might help/hinder her and that we could do to help her adapt.

Thank you again, all of your comments are reassuring. I must admit, we have not had any experience with any animals that have had to go through any type of surgery or big changes.

How did the operation go?
I can't give advice about the aftercare following the op as Lottie came to us with 3 legs.
Not much advice other than your little one will adapt much better than you think, the only changes we made were to get a lower tray so she can get in and out better & we took away a 3 storey nic cube "house" as she couldn't get up but nothing else, she cant jump (mainly on the sofa) like Simba but can certainly run away from him when necessary ;0)
I hope for a quick recovery.

The op went well thanks. We spent an hour with her and she is hoping around already, eating and getting a lot of fuss. Although she doesn't like her tshirt yet :-( hopefully she will take to it as don't like the thought of a cone!

It is good to know that there shouldn't be too much change for her. We do have a two tier hutch but w will make it a one tier for the time being.

Hoping to bring her home tomorrow :). X

I am sure she will be bouncing about very soon xx
