  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Vasculitis ?

Rabbit with vasculitis

Unfortunately my rabbit was diagnosed with Vasculitis today :(
The vet had never seen it before with rabbits. So, I think it's very rare, but possible.
They did a biopsy and took blood/hair sample etc. to determine what his problem is (he started to get weird spots and hair was falling out).
Since it's so rare they are going to discuss the situation with a center who knows more about it. No idea what the treatment is going to look like yet. But we are staying positive :)

This is what Jenna was diagnosed with in March. She had to have a month of pentoxifylline therapy with extreme diet restriction as we believe it was brought on either by bad dog treats or meat protein allergy.
She is the only pet I have ever had with this condition. We aren't certain if it was just a cutaneous vasculitis or if it had spread throughout her internal organs, but she was very ill for awhile and had a lot of trouble breathing and a high pulse rate that indicated it was quite extensive.
I do not know if pentoxifylline can work in rabbits, but it saved Jenna's life. Usually it is used in conjunction with steroids like prednisolone, but she had a reaction to that so we couldn't use it.
Thinking of you and your bunnies, Jane. ((((((((((((((((Vibes))))))))))))))))) xxxx

This thread was from last year, relating to Stanley who is sadly no longer with us

It is very useful to know about the Pentoxifyline though and I am so relieved that Jenna recovered xx

Ah, I am sorry Jane, I didn't look at the dates :( The thread popped up in the new posts. :(
My apologies. xxxx
