Eye abscess pls help....

LainiT

Warren Scout
My little 7 month old bun has a suspected internal eye cyst/abscess. Just booked an appointment with a specialist for a full diagnostic check. £110 which we really can't afford. He's sitting with his eye closed most of the time now so clearly in pain. What I need to know is it worth going for this appointment on Thurs, do rabbits ever recover from these or is it best to just get him booked in for eye removal at my vets asap and not waste 2 days waiting, then put poor Mav through a pointless diagnostic appointment. Help!!

My Chloe had an eye abscess when I got her. She just had eye drops and some antibiotics i think, and it cleared up very quickly with no lastng damage to her sight.

We're in Notts. Its an opthalmic specialist at Southwell Minster vets. I can't Wait til Thurs, can almost see it getting bigger bless him. He's had eye drops for an ulcer over xmas presume its related to that. Been on Baytril and had antibiotic injection two weeks ago. Off to usual vets to discuss in 5 mins gulp

It may be worth asking the vet for some pain relief, as that is probably going to be extremely painful - metacam may be required for pain relief.

Joe had one a couple of years ago, and the eye specialist at my vets said he didn't recommend removal of the eye as the eyelid needs to be stitched shut so you still have the problem of there being nowhere for the pus to escape from or be removed from, in some circumstances though i am sure it is for the best. Joes was cured by using metacam, baytril and depocillin (i think??) the depocillin was given as a high dose daily for a few days then every other day then weekly then fortnightly until it was gone, it was a long process and he is blind in that eye now due to the swelling pressing on the optic nerve but it doesn't affect him at all, he leaps about and runs up and down their ramp with no problems.

I hope your bun gets sorted out soon x

Metacam has an anti-inflammatory property as well, so may help with any pressure from the abcess/cyst.

I really hope your little guy can be helped. Sending loads of vibes :)

I've got Meloxidyl...hope that'll help him. I'm slightly clueless at things like this. Think I'm going to the specialist on Thurs, need to be sure I'm doing the best for our little fella after reading all the comments. Got him booked in for eye removal a week on Thurs but I can cancel that if need be its only at the regular vets.
