  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

hiccups for 1 hour? or is it something worse ?

I am away from home at the moment but according to the hubby Dottie was twitching and making weird noises this morning ("sounds like farting" he said) . being that we are still new to rabbits he took her to the vet today (senior vet in a animal hospital / vet practice) , he checked her out and couldn't find anything wrong with her at all.
He gave her some short term antibiotics (just in case) and sent her home.

Now it seems to have started again, we did some research and it looks close enough to the hiccup videos on youtube, but it is pretty full on and has been going on for a full hour now.
Does anyone know what could be causing hiccups, do they normally last this long and what else could it be if not hiccups ?

I should mention that she is eating and drinking etc as usual. she's currently fully stretched out on the floor chilling with Lilly and does not seem upset but is still having the hiccups (if that's what it is?!)

Their diet is excel and timothy hays , excel pellets and fresh herbs and greens plus some veg etc . We have not made any dietary changes since we have gotten them.

Should we be worried ? if she's still got it in the morning we will take her down to the vet again , but if it could be something worse we'll rush her down again now.

Is she making sounds from her nose ? Or mouth ?

If mouth, it could be serious.

If from nose.. Is there any discharge (what colour) or any foreign material sticking out(hay etc)

It could be an allergy, infection or blockage if from the nose.

hubby said its hard to say but it seems to be from the nose. apparently she's making "farting"noises, no discharge etc.

the vet checked her over thoroughly and couldn't find anything wrong (checked abdomen, listened to lungs etc) however she was symptom free when she was done there.

hubby is very concerned but other than the "hiccups" she is acting perfectly normal . ?!?!

Is the time between them constant? I'm just wondering if maybe it's sneezing and she's got something stuck up her nose that she's trying to get out. That would likely be in bursts though rather than regular intervals.
