Internal Eye Abscess/Cyst...please help...

LainiT

Warren Scout
Well,

Our poor little bun. He's only 7 months old, and I'm fearing he could lose his eye.

He was at the vets several times over Xmas /New Year with an ulcer on the surface of his eye, all cleared up with eye drops, but then Wed night I notices a whitish half moon inside his eye. Took him to the vet next morning and he thought it was an cyst/abscess. Gave him a Meloxidyl injection and I've got 10 days of Baytril (1 ml a day) to give him.

Been back today and apparently they can't do anything else. Little Maverick hopefully will live with it...and if it flairs up all they can do is remove his eye..I just don't like sitting back and doing nothing, is there really nothing else??:(

Please help...we love our little baby bunny.

Anyone have any experience of these?

Sorry to hear about your bunnies eye.

I was told my bun may need his eye out the other week, went to another local vet for a second opinion and was told it was cataract (cataracts could display as half moon I think) and it is not always necessary to remove the eye with a cataract. My bunnies eye started with looking "cloudy".

There are always eye specialists too if need be.

Don't know if these are any help to you:

Is the eye bulging or weeping or is it 'just' sort of like white disc or half circle on it?

If the latter then it may be something like cataracts or EC induced rather than an abcess.

Does your vet have a rabbit or eye specialist at all they can refer to? Some of the causes of eye problems in rabbits are quite specific to rabbits and some vets may not have seen them.

Whereabouts are you?

Thanks for your replies you 2, Bunny Babe, I've looked at the images on one of the links and it doesn't look like any of them...its right at the bottom of his eye, maybe 1mm height and 5mm across, looks like its pooling creamy white liquid of some sort. Vet pressed on his eyes and said there was no increased pressure inside...whatever that may mean!

Parsnipbun, there's no discharge at all, hasn't been any...he was a little bit quiet last week but then he's back to his perky self. No discolouration or cloudiness in his eye either. I've asked the vet to refer us to an eye specialist... we're in Notts and he says there's a good one about half an hour away from us, hopefully he'll be able to tell me what's happening. Bless him.

Hope he's gonna be ok.

Thats great that he has a referral!!!

i know thanks, the vet just didn't seem there was any need, like nothing could be done so was feeling a bit sad. Its been one thing after another with him and his sister...not sorted insurance on them yet, typical. I just get one thing sorted and then we're back at the vets with something else...We've only had them since September and already we're on 1st name terms with all the vets and nurses!!

My bunny Dexter had an abcess in the anterior chamber in his eye. He had his eye removed last November at 1 year old. He has done fantastic without it, he bounced back really well and plays and jumps and hops around like any other 2 eyed bun.

I hope your little one doesn't need surgery but just to assure you that they can do fine with just one eye :)

One of our rescue buns had an abscess inside his eye, he had it removed but sadly it was too late, it had tracked to his brain and he didn;t pull through :(

As MichG said buns can do really well with just one eye, so if he does need surgery it would be best to get it done sooner rather than leave it.

I hope the specialist can help, good luck x

Really? Oh that's good news. Thankyou. He's such a lively little fella, that's reassuring though, cheers :D

No worries, I am so glad I went through with the op, he was clearly in some discomfort before as he is so much happier now. Vet described it as having a constant dull headache feel.
If you have any worries or want to see pics or anything then feel free to pm me when ever :)

oh no bless him. That's sad. The vet was quite happy for me to leave it til it started to bother Mav or it got worse. Blimey...hope the referral comes through quickly.

Starting to feel a bit better now thanks you lot. Can I just ask...I'm really squeamish when it comes to wounds, I'm sure I've read somewhere about someone having to flush out the socket, is this really the case cos seriously there is no way I could. Ok, preparing myself for the worst now.

Dylan was left without treatment by his previous owner so by the time he was rescued it was too late, so sad as he so deserved a fresh start :(

The vet said your bunnies eye pressure was Ok, Dylans was increasing by the time we operated

Never had to flush out a socket and we have had 3 bunnies with eyes removed. Normally the wound is neatly stitched and heals quickly :)

I didn't have to, it was neatly sewn over, but bloody and oozed a bit of blood the first night but couldn't clean It as didn't want to dislodge the clot behind the scar (the socket fills with blood which clots, if you dislodge the clot it will bleed more) sounds gross. Will try to send a picture tomorrow of the night he came home, looked gross but he cleaned himself up within 24 hours.

Definitely, all crossed here for you.

We had one bunny come here who had his previous eye removal op go wrong. It was infected and full of pus but even that didn't need flushing just antibiotics :D

Not sure if you've seen my thread

http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/showthread.php?330263-Vibes-for-Flossie-please-UPDATE-she-s-home-)

on sunday i noticed my flossie had a slightly bulging eye and her face was wet, she had not been quite right for a few days either . I had initially thought it was the extra cold weather. I took her to the vets first thing Monday morning and she was kept in for an eye ultrasound, the vet said it was likely a tumour or abscess behind the eye and the best thing was to act quickly and remove the eye. She had the op yesterday and came home this evening, she seems a lot happier so must of been in a lot of pain :(

I do hope you find out what's wrong with your little buns eye. If you dont think your vets are experienced with rabbits change I'm so glad I did

This is how Summers eye looked after removal
