  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My lionhead female rabbit seems to have started refusing her normal pellet food; she has had the same food for 4 years but now won't eat, so we brought some of the food with hay, fruit etc in and she will nibble at that, plus eat fresh veg but not the same amount as she was previously ... she doesn't actually seem different though; could this be a phase or is something actually wrong? Thanks in advance!
Oh - and her poop seems paler, but is still solid!

You urgently need to get her to a vet.

This could be dental related (spurs on teeth causing pain) and so she couldnt eat.

This could then cause GI stasis, which is where the gut slows down and eventually stops.

It could also be Bloat/GI Blockage.

All of the above are excrutiatingly painful for a rabbit and require immediate attention.

Loads of vibes for your bunny!

Oh Blimey ... pretty new at this! Thanks; will get her to the vet!

No worries :)

I'm so glad you searched out help for your lady bun!! :)

So you know, if a rabbit ever stops eating/pooping its pretty serious and needs urgent veterinary attention. What comes out, is just as important as what goes in, so always monitor for output too :)

Good luck at the vet. Any of the things Graham mentions could be the cause, and all are potentially serious.
