  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

New owner worry?

Hello all,

I adopted two bunnies just after Christmas, and having read a lot of threads about care/diet, I don't know if I should be concerned about Daisy. When they went for their vaccinations 3 weeks ago, the vet said she seems a bit pot bellied and to keep an eye on her. Her behaviour has only improved (after the stress of being re-homed and then being taken to the vets) and she dashes around and occasionally lovingly harasses her devoted but neutered husband, so I don't see anything in that to worry about.

I have noticed that she does indeed look pot bellied: however she is a lion head crossed with netherland dwarf (we think) so her body does look a wee bit big for her head and I simply can't decide if the pot belly is a problem. She eats (fresh veg, hay, pellets) and drinks fine, and I've seen her use the litter tray without a problem.

They are due to go in for VHD, and she will need spayed soon - does anyone have any advice or words of wisdom?

As long as she's eating and pooing - that's the main thing.

How many pellets do you feed a day? a handful? two?

they generally get through three handfuls (but I have small hands) a day - I couldn't tell you how much each one actually eats, but when they're in the house with me after work, they both seem to eat about the same.

You may want to cut back a bit. Recommendations are (bun and breed depending) an eggcupful a day.

The pellets are the most fattening part of the diet.

What are the poo's like? Big round and golden? Or smaller harder?

You should be able to crumble a good one easily

She's about 18 months old we think. The vet didn't say anything specific, but I'll take them back in next week and double check.

Having stood in a fair few poos, I can say that the majority are crumbly - occasionally there are clumps of wetter ones in the litter trays, but I think in general they are fine (given that I cannot say for certain whose is whose!

I've cut back on their pellets and have increased their hay - thank you so much for the quick (and reassuring) replies. This forum has helped me really appreciate having them around, and to enjoy them even when they want nothing to do with me! I know they are happy, and if that means they thump at me, and would rather sit with each other than me, so be it.
