  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

hind leg amputation

does anyone know roughly how much a hind leg amputation costs? i need to get as much information on it before speaking to my mum about it seriously and will be contacting my vet shortly but need a price in mind before. Also any risks etc. Iv been looking it up but not really much information so any anyone can share is really appreciated.

I think Elwoods cost us around £500, but that included x-rays and before and after care, not just the actual op. He ended up being hospitalised for 4 days.

I would agree with that . . about £500-£650

If you cannot afford it then think seriously about asking for help from a charity/rescue/sanctuary rather than deciding to PTS

(apols if you are not in that situation)

I can afford it if my mum agrees to help me abit but shes not sure as the vet said he wouldnt be able to cope with not having a hind leg. Im 100% sure but its difficult to make my mum see. i just spoke to her about it, and she said but the vet had seen it and he will now best. shes loves him to bits and would go for it 100% had the vet said from the start

can you not go to the other recommended vet (I seem to recall you had a thread asking for recommendations). Surey if you go to Frances Harcourt Brown and 'start again' explaning to your mum that this is a specialist vet then she will listen to what that vet says?

I would not want a rabbit amputated except by a specialist anyway.

I know of a French Lop who did have a hind leg amputated following an infection which developed in the foot starting with a simple grass seed. The leg was amputated together with part of the hip and the bun was hospitalised for a few days then on enforced rest for a few weeks at home. It took a while for the 3.5 year old Frenchy to adapt but she did and enjoyed a further 18 months of happy, active life. From memory, the surgery was close to £1000 by a vet in Staffordshire.

The price everyone is quoting seems very high. When I worked in PAH we had to have a buns leg amputated and it cost us in the region of £265 if I remember correctly.
