Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Mouth Ulcer

Hello everyone...just after abit of advice.

My rabbit stopped eating two days ago so I grinded up his food, mixed it with water and he was having that fine. Booked an appointment at the vet to get him checked. This morning I noticed a small amount of blood on his back (from licking) and took him to the vet.

They said he has an ulcer in his mouth which needs to be sorted.

They said they have to give him an anaesthetic and then sort it out and will cost about £140. They gave him an anti-inflammatory today.

Was just wondering if that's the only way to treat it and if that's how much it usually costs.

Thanks for any help.

It may be that he actually has spurs on his molar teeth (sharp points on cheek teeth) which are now cutting into his cheeks/tongue. He will require a full Dental under GA to address this issue.

The cost of treatment will vary as all Veterinary Surgeries set their own prices.

As well as the excellent advice by Jacks jane - just to add that anything mouth related in buns needs urgent attention as they go downhill very rapidly if they cannot eat properly.

The fee sounds perfectly reasonable for an op. and I suspect they will find he has teeth problems which must be causing a lot of pain if he is bleeding.

After he has had the op. and is well again and eating - do check that he has mostly a hay diet and a pelleted feed as this will help keep his teeth in trim!
