Compassion in World Farming - Spring Raffle for Rabbits (May be upsetting)

helgalush

Wise Old Thumper
I just wondered if anyone was aware that CiWF are running a spring raffle for farmed rabbits. I received a letter in the post with some raffle tickets in for their spring raffle, the proceeds of which will go to help their fight to protect farmed rabbits (if you remember last year there were a number of planning applications for factory rabbit farms - CiWF were quite vocal in their opposition of these).

It says "the proceeds from our raffle will be used to help stop the terrible suffering and cruelty factory farming brings - such as the shocking treatment of intensively farmed rabbits. Often these rabbits are kept in small, barren wire cages where they exist in a space which can be no bigger than an ordinary sheet of A4 typing paper. Conditions are so cramped that they cannot hop about, burrow or even stand upright.

The money you raise will help end their nightmare. Enter our raffle today and you can keep us fighting to protect farmed rabbits and every other animal that's suffering in factory farms.

Like all farm animals, rabbits were never meant to be caged. Gregarious and extremely athletic, they need to stretch, run, jump and socialise with other rabbits. When they are afraid they need to hide. In a wire cage, all of this is impossible. When stressed and frustrated, they gnaw on the bars. They can even mutilate each other's ears and bodies in their desperation. Standing on wire mesh can cause terrible pressure sores on the feet of adult rabbits. When ammonia gases burn their eyes, infections can develop and often go untreated.

I cannot express enough how awful these conditions are for rabbits and the terrible pain and misery they must experience. Over 32 million rabbits farmed in the EU each year die prematurely in their cages and what life they do have is completely wasted.

What's needed is legislation that ensures these bright, inquisitive creatures have a humane amount of space, and safe conditions to live in. But we need to create the political will to do this. That is what our Filthy Business campaign is all about."

I will contact CiWF and find out if I can sell tickets via RU on their behalf - hope this would be ok Mods?? (they have said that we can sell to family and friends but I would be worried about any tickets getting lost in the post)...but if I can sort something would anyone be interested in buying raffle tickets from me for this campaign?

The tickets cost £1 each. 1st prize is £2,000, 2nd prize is £1,000, 3rd prize is £500 and 4th prize is £100. Stubs need to be returned by 13th April 2012 and the draw takes place on 20th April 2012.

Alternatively if anyone wants to contact them directly to make a donation, here is their webpage: http://www.ciwf.org.uk

Thanks for reading.

Thank you very much Hot Cross Bun, I will just contact them first, to make sure its ok to do it and also get hold of some more tickets. I'd want to ask them to verify the total I send in as well so that anyone who buys tickets from me is reassured that I have sent all the money off.

Rabbits are used for animal testing but I think the focus of CiWF is for those that are farmed for meat and/or fur.

Thanks Fifi, do you happen to have the link at all? I couldnt see it (and there wasnt anything about rabbits under their farm animal section so I want to ask them about that too). Thanks. :)

thanks for making us aware of this! I was just reading about the same thing on facebook but in australia and would like to do something for bunny mad magazine so thanks for the website link as i will contact them!

Oh that'd be great if it featured in Bunny Mad magazine - looking forward to the next issue already.

CiWF were great at lending support against those planning applications for intensive rabbit farms last year, they got good coverage in the press about it too.

I would definatly buy a few tickets eith on here or from the website. Let me know if they are going to be sold on here or not please.:D

I think it'll probably be easiest if folk could buy direct from their website - just will make it more straightforward all round. I hope thats ok?

Thanks :D

(When I first posted this thread I didnt know there was a direct link for getting tickets)
