Ultrasound scans on bunnies

bunny babe

Wise Old Thumper
Some of you may have read in health that Homer has a "cloudy eye". He is due for a dental probably next week and I was wondering if anyone knew if they needed specialist equipment to do an ultrasound scan on his eye (or if a standard one that is normally in vets would suffice). I could get them to do an x-ray too but that will probably only tell me that he has elongated roots which I already know - would an x-ray show up anything more than this e.g. abcess etc.

I just need to know that it is nothing more serious than cataracts as I worry so much (having previously lost a dog to cancer that started in her eye and a bunny with teeth problems/abcess). I know cataracts can be serious too.

Homer remains fine in himself and is quite lively.

ooh - not sure about eyes . .

we have had ultra sound scans done by those sort of 'probes' that they sweep over the outside of the skin done at the vets,

also we had a full MRI/CT scan (into the 'tunnel' like a human) done on Parsley - he had to go to a specialist unit and it cost a lot . .

I don't know about buns but I am a radiography student for people medicine:thumb:.
X-rays can show abscesses around the tooth root as the bone would get a pocket where the infection is. I don't think you would ultrasound an eye as it requires a gel and I don't think that would be healthy for the delicate tissues of the eye. I would say MRI/CT would be the best alternative to x-ray and I know this is an option in some places, but I'm not sure it would be nescsary if looking for infection in the bone.
From what little I know about buns, they would be sedated for either procedure and MRI is costly, X-ray I think is about £50 and both will show abscesses in bone, MRI/CT will show abnormalities in the soft tissue.

This article may help http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Dental_diseases/Radio/Skull_radio.htm in the second set of images it shows dental abscesses on image D.

Edited to add CT as didn't know if they did that for buns until the previous post was added as I typed this

When Sandy had his eye issues my vets told me there is an eye specialist vets in Frodsham it might be worth asking about them?

Sorry I cant be more help and good luck

There is also an eye specialist who has seen rabbits and is also attached to a vets with rabbits specialists - she works out of the Animal Health Trust in newmarket (and also via a Cambridge vets but diagnostics are at the AHT)

Here name is Claudia and I can provide details if you want.

Thank Kath, this is who my vet wanted me to go to as she had no idea what is was.

We took him for a 2nd opinion the following morning and the vet was pretty sure it was cataract or trauma and explained everything. This really is to put my mind at rest and I didn't want to take him all the way to Frodsham. To see him you wouldn't know there was anything wrong.

:wave:Thank you.
Ah, I don't know much about ultrasound so I guess that would not be appropriate if gel is required.
