Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

I think my bunny rabbit has developed an abscess on the underside of his chin, help?

I think I've spotted a very large abscess on the underside of my bunny rabbit's chin. it seems also to have occured a small wound on the lump directly on the underside of his mouth as well. I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow morning, but I'm wondering about what to do until that? is it likely that the abscess will rumpture? should I try to prevent him licking himself or scratching? I am very worried.. I've researched a lot about the type of surgery abscesses often require, but I am still very insecure about many things. Is the placement of the abscess (though very usual for bunnies) awfully complicated to reach surgically?

thank you so much in advance.

yup, the lump is solid and stretches to the right side of his chin. I can upload a photo of it later, when he's not sleeping, but it is quite hard to see because of all his fur. and then there's the wound beneath his mouth, I think that's the source of it. I'm heading to the vet in an hour or so, hope it's nothing too severe. crossing my fingers!
