  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

New Kit
12 week old buck. moved from mother 3 weeks too late. Simply didntnotice:

Rapid weight loss
Awful Coat
Bottom teeth too long
Top teeth starting to curl inwards
Droppings look fine and is able to eat what appears to be normally
Not eating any hay or grasses and not chewing toys or indeed hutch

Sat in house presently with dog nail clippers. i think its all down to the teeth. Wanted some advice before i do more damage than good.

Please forgive me not observing sooner, new to the fancy, wont make same mistake again.

Any advice?

Is he able to eat? Is he pooing? drinking and weeing?

Is he bright and alert?

If he is then I would suggest consulting a rabbit savvy vet ASAP and looking into incisor removal. Please don't clip them yourself that can create many more problems, like abscesses, or breaking the tooth (which would make removal harder). If he isn't able to eat especially (but also poo, wee, or looking lathergic or anything) then you need to see an emergency vet tonight.

Is mum pregnant again?

Do not, under ANY circumstances clip the teeth yourself.

The Rabbit needs Veterinary attention ASAP

Given the age of the Rabbit the Dental issues are obviously congenital and therefore inherent in the line you are breeding from

You should stop breeding from this line immediately. All other kits from the litter may be effected and should be checked by a Vet too.
