  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Does this sound like VHD?

My friend was going to get 3 rabbits but two of them died before she could get them, she said that they weren't spayed and were a bit ill anyway (I don't know what illness they had) she was going to get the one rabbit that was left but apparently she just seemed a bit ill, a bit quiet and just not very interested in much, and it died suddenly. I asked if it was ill before, but she just said it was a bit quiet, and because it died so suddenly I didn't know if it would be VHD?
I know the rabbits weren't vaccinated, and I know rabbits can die very suddenly from VHD, I don't know much else about it, so I may have it totally wrong, but I just wanted to check.

It's possible but it could also be coccidiosis, or the myxo that causing acute pnuemonia or other things really. It's impossible to know without a PM.

Rabbits can die very quickly if they have VHD. We had some bunnies when I was little and they caught this because they weren't vaccinated. They just died minute after minute, but hours before that they seemed completely normal. So I guess it could be VHD, but you need PM to confirm that.
