  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Teeth

Cookiemum

New Kit
Just wanted a bit of advice, took healthy rabbit in for annual injections, young vet attempted to look at Cookies teeth, said they were a bit long and suggested a 2 wk hay only diet. Cookie a bit plump apparently looks ok to me.
Anyway the hay only, to help grind his teeth down. I feel so horrible not feeding him, he normally eats hay and just thought best thing would be to cut down on food not stop completely. I have to go back in two wks.
Has anybody else been told to do this, thanks, any advice welcome

I would let him have grass and herbs in addition to his hay. However it may acerbate the problem. My dental bunnie Bonnie was on a hay/grass/herbs diet only and her molar spurs returned faster than ever. Now although she has access to hay she refuses it and prefers her pellets and grass. According to a few other members on her increased pellets can help to wear down spurs and long teeth. So far I have found this to be the case. Bonnie has gone her longest so far without needing a dental. However I can only give you my personal experience.

I would definitely follow the vet's advice but beware it may have a negative result and you may want to discuss other feeding options if that is the case.
