  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Is this UTI?

A. Week or two ago I posted a thread about Gimli's hormonal scent marking(peeing) on my bed. Recently though I have seen spots of urine on my bed and on the feece in his cage and I have just found more urine spots on my bed and a puddle of wee. Could this be UTI or just the scent marking?

It could be either !!

Does he have any other symptoms ?

Is he neutered ?

A Vet check is needed if you think he may have a UTI.

Rabbit urine can be various colours for different reasons! The one that causes most people concern is when its red, our first thought is panic as it looks like blood. Red coloured (pigment) wee can be caused by some food, stress and change in temp and is not necessarily a cause for concern. However, if you think it is blood it needs checking asap and a vet can confirm if it is actually blood by a simple test. If it is blood it can be a variety of things one of which is a UTI. As with all things bunny you must get treatment as soon as possible as bunnies will often hide pain and health problems until they become serious! We have just lost a bunny who deteriorated very quickly, he did have blood in his wee and other symptoms were lethargy, not eating, teeth grinding (pain) and straining to go for a wee. If you are at all concerned and your gut instinct tells you he's not quite right take him to the vet!
