  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Coughing/sneezing

neophyte

New Kit
I have an appointment at the vet for Monday. My little one has been making strange noises recently. I thought nothing of it until it became these awful sneezing/coughing fits. After monitoring him for a bit I noticed it happens mostly after he's had some water.

I've been keeping rabbits for 11 years, I feed him hay and fresh fruit/veggies consistently on top of his pellets and keep his environment clean. He eats and poops regularly and his behavior is the same. He spends a lot of time outside of his cage, I recently moved and I'm wondering if it could have been something in my house. I am not really seeking advice, but I would like to know if anyone has seen something of the sort.

I've attached a video, and would appreciate if people kept this topic clean.

Wow those sneezes are very very loud.
There's something wrong.
It could be due to a lot of things from bacteria infections, tear duct issues, allergies etc.

Are you sure you have a rabbit savvy vet that will be seeing your rabbit?

Yes, my vet specializes in rabbits. This place does not treat cats or dogs... I hope it's not too serious and treatable. I'm trying to find someone who has experience with those symptoms. He has me worried!

We went to the vets today with Poppy, she hasn't got snuffles but an allergy, and to prevent any mucus build up we were given Bisolvon (Bronchial Mucolytic) It's an oral powder we have to give every 2 days :) Her sneezes can get very loud but are a lot less frequent if we hoover up the dust and hair, and our vets are rabbit specialists so I trust them when they say she hasn't got snuffles :) Hope you can sort bunny out! :)

Your Rabbit needs to be examined by a Vet today The 'gagging' is more indicative of a problem in the throat/trachea than 'just' the nose. This is potentially extremely serious so please do not delay and get your Rabbit to a Vet today

Good luck

I agree, that sounds like something in the throat. It's very similar to the noise my cat makes when he has a fur ball and is gagging trying to get it up.
