Referral to Francis at HB's

RedFraggle

Warren Veteran
Well the decision has been made today that Scarlet will be off to see Francis. Our vet is going to ring her and discuss her teeth issues as he isn't happy with 10 to 12 week dentals (and nor am I) and wonders if she would benefit from an extraction of one tooth.
Since we adopted her last April, our vet has done 3 aggressive dentals, we have upped her hay eating (and are still in pursuit of a 90% hay diet, she'll get there eventually) and the frequency hasn't come down at all. She has one molar missing (unknown when or how with her being a rescue bun) so the tooth below has nothing to wear against and gradually curves over her tongue, and she also has one rogue upper molar that grows at a jaunty angle and goes into her cheek eventually (or would, obviously we don't let that happen). Our vet now feels that a specialist opinion is the best way forward.
I am very grateful for a vet that is happy to discuss with a specialist, knows the limits of his own practice, and thinks of my pets best long term interests. As he said, if anyone can fix Scarlet's teeth it'll be Francis.
Am part filled with dread at what my dear little bun may be about to embark on and hope that we might one day be able to get her dental frequency down.
Just information sharing really, but if anyone has any similar experiences to share I'd love to hear them.

I didn't realise Scarlet was a dental bun, but hope the referral leads the way to longer times in-between them for her. xxx

Good luck

My Herbie was referred to FHB for his dental issues (his dentals were every 2-3 weeks). She is excellent and it definitely puts your mind at rest knowing that you've had the best advice possible. She explains everything and takes as much time as it needs, never rushing through anything.

Herbie had a mouthful of dodgy molars, so unfortunately for him extraction wasn't possible, but Frances recommend that we carry on with the regular dentals whenever Herbie needed them, even if it was every 2 weeks. Herbie started with his problems when he was a year old and he lived to 7, so he had a long and happy life despite his problems.

I hope Frances can do something which will help Scarlett. We have our fingers and paws crossed for you both. xx

Thanks. What we'd like to consider is removing the one at a jaunty angle that goes into her cheek. It is always this tooth in particular that triggers the dental, but our vet said Francis would have a better idea of whether this should be done. It doesn't wear at all on the one below anyway so it makes sense to us that this would at least stretch it out though. Glad to hear another "Francis know best" story!

Good luck... hope all goes well. :thumb:

Ive only had one visit to FHB.. and although she is very good I was very disapponted at the surgery rules.
If I rang to see how my bun was.... I couldnt speak to anyone....not even a nurse.... my call had to be put in a book... which would be checked and read at a later time. I found this quite distressing.. as I just needed to know my bun was ok :(

Thanks for the heads up. At least it means they won't be dragged away from the actual animal care to deal with phone calls I guess.

Booked in for the 14th. I was advised that if Francis wanted to do anything she may admit her and do it on the Wednesday. Excited at getting an expert opinion and also filled with dread. Ori will be going for moral support!
