Switching vets Q and Colne Valley Vets?

Has anybody (probably only Essex and Suffolk RUers) heard anything about Colne Valley Vets in Colchester?

Following recent events Im trying to find a new more rabbit savvy vet as close to home as possible! Matilda&Twinks said that the crematorium owners get to hear about a lot of vets but that they had heard a lot of good things said about Colne Valley in relation to rabbits!

When you check out a new vet apart from asking how many bunnies they treat and if they have an experienced rabbit vet, is it normal or ok to ask them things like what is their normal treatment for suspected EC, stasis, and general medical questions? What do others do/ask?

I don't know much about Colne vets, sorry.

It's definitely more than ok to ask questions though. There are some useful questions to ask on my website. You need to satisfy yourself that you can trust the vet before entrusting your animals to them. Most comfortable and competent vets should be happy to answer questions.

I go there :wave:

Ben is fab with rabbits and exotics. He's got several of mine through tricky ops and is incredibly gentle and pro-animal. He's also keen to learn and treats you like a human being rather than looking down on you as a few vets do, plus he is genuinely interested in new research etc rather than being threatened by it. The reception staff are friendly and helpful too. :wave:

Apparently I lied then, because Tinsel did tell me before the vets she uses. My bad, sorry!

Aw you can't remember everyone's vets! And I use one in Dovercourt and one in Little Clacton as well; just depends which appointment is available and/or which vet the bun has seen before.

Ooh this sounds promising then!! Is Ben just rabbit savvy or does he have exotics training in rabbits if you know what I mean? What ops has he done? They have quite a few vets on their website what are the others like because you know bunnies only get poorly at the most awkward times!

Right off to check out your website Sky-O any new vet is going to get the mother of all quizzings :lol:

He fixed a herniated spay (he didn't do the original spay - learnt my lesson about making sure he operates rather than assume he will because he did the pre-op check). Struggling to remember the other op; it was years back but I remember there being another one, if you see what I mean. There's another pretty bunny-savvy one there - female - (on the pics on the wall it tells you their names/specialisms). Think there's another male vet there too for rabbits but don't know him.

Not sure about his training - he does a lot with birds and reptiles though... I've been going there for years - maybe over 10 or longer!

Oooh and he recently removed Mole's incisors effectively - they haven't grown back. :wave:

Thanks Tinsel :thumb: I know Jackie (If thats the one?) because she also worked at Penrose and was touted as being their rabbit expert! I met her on a rabbit open evening, she had her rabbit with her that she had spayed! But when someone asked her what to do for a rabbit with an upset tummy she said give them some probiotic yogurt :shock: that kind of put me on edge! I guess at any one surgery there is only likely to be a very limited number of vets with rabbit knowledge to varying degrees so as long as we know whos good at what we'll be ok! and it helps to have vets who are open to discussion on treatment and who truely want to help the bunny! The last vet we saw at Penrose was very matter of fact, she knew best she was the vet attitude! when she phoned up the day after Co-Co died she didn't even say 'I'm sorry for your loss' or words to that effect and that has also bugged me

oops sorry gone off on a tangent... clearly still struggling with it all

Sky-O fab website very informative :thumb: I'm gonna print the questions and any new vet is gonna be grilled to within an inch of their lives :lol: Also saw D&Ds set-up on the housing

the lounge is even crazier now with more tunnels
