help with new bunnies

franpete

New Kit
hi everyone we are new to this. we rescued two male buns on friday off freecycle and they werent in the best condition so we took them, then on monday we took them to our local vet for a check up to find out that one has been bitten on his boy bits ow,he is now on baytril for a week and hopefully he will be ok for castration plus they are having vaccines for vhd and myxi. plus the so called rabbit hutch is more use for a syrian hamster than two buns so we took them off there owner to give them a better home without know the full damage to them and the cost of new items such as a hutch, toys, bedding, food,up coming vet bills etc is there anywhere we can get help with this, any information would be greatful.

fran and pete.

well done for rescuing these two!!

Vets are expensive! If you are on benefits at all you may be able to get the local RSPCA clinic to give the vaccines - but tbh I would get an experienced rabbit vet to do the castration.

VHD should be given 2 weeks after maxi vac BUT our vet also recommends that it is 2 weeks after any operations (so that the full immune response can be mounted) - so you may be looking at something like maxi jab, then castration 2 weeks after, the VHD 2 weeks ater -

I have put maxi jab first but at this time of year unless you are n the west country or east anglia you may wish to do castration first - especially if they are showing any tendency towards fighting.

Hutches - are they indoors or out? Indoors if you use a cage at all the large dog crates are good as a 'base' - you can fit shelves etc.

Outdoors the bigger and STRONGER (foxes are a really bad problem everywhere now) the better. Bolts and welded mesh are a must.

and a close able front for the night. And a big enclosed run space - in fact tbh it is cheaper to have house buns!!

Toys can be saved on - others will tell you about hay in loo rolls etc:lol:
