from going round and round in circles with Hopscotch. Every time I think he's getting a bit better we just go backwards again  Managed about 5 weeks with no visits to the vet before Christmas. Went last Tuesday and now going again this Thursday  I feel awful for my poor little man. Why can't we just get him better and be done with it?!

It's just unfortunate that the abcess is where it is :( I've been doing lots of research and really the only way to get rid of an abcess is removal, but the vet says he can't do that?

Haha thanks Graham, I think you should totally keep typing emoticons out even though they are back now!

He didn't say he can't do it, but he doesn't want to do it! We were all booked in for surgery a few months ago but he changed his mind after x-rays showed that it had gotten smaller since the previous x-rays. I think it's just working out whether it is worth the risk, especially when it seemed to be getting better (although slowly!)

It must be so frustrating and upsetting  I hope the vet can find a way to help Hopscotch. Sending vibes for him and hugs for you xx

I know it's not anyone's fault but that doesn't make it easier sadly :(

I haven't been home this weekend but Mum tells me that he's been sneezing all weekend and I've noticed it in the few hours I've been home  Need to phone vet to update him tomorrow anyway so will see what he wants to do with him next......

I have everything crossed that it goes as well as possible. I don't think people realise how much Hopscotch and yourself have had to go through - just coz you don't post a tonne of threads about it. Poor Hopscotch has had to have so many nose flushes and vets visits, and he's only not long been well enough to be vaccinated and neutered. Not to mention the enormous vets bills you've paid out for him, which I'm sure a lot of bunny owners wouldn't.

Hopscotch is a very lucky bunny for having such a lovely mommy who looks after him well

The vet rang me at about 10am (giving me a mild heart attack, considering he asked me to ring him at about 11.30, so I suddenly panicked because he was calling me!)

He said that he is fine, he seems bright and he's been eating etc. He's going to keep him again tonight :( to keep an eye on him and make sure he continues to be ok before sending him home with me!

So I am to ring again tomorrow morning for another update and I have my fingers crossed that he'll say he can come home for nose rubs and lots of strokes!!

He's basically got a third nostril now, where the abscess was taken out, the hole goes right through. His breathing sounds awful! It looks awful too :( Have just managed to get a close up as he's finally settled down after having a hop around.

Sorry! I don't know... he didn't say! I didn't ask why when he said it, I was just so glad to see him and get him home! I had to ring him when I got home to check the instructions he'd given me on keeping it clean and when to give medicine  It was weeping a bit earlier so would make sense though!

Tatihou

One of our dogs had an open wound on her neck from an excised abcess for several weeks and the vet tried to keep it open - ie, stopped it sealing itself - as he wanted it to heal from the inside out so infection wasn't trapped. She was on antibiotics during the two weeks and she healed just fine.

It was a big wound - about 6 inches long and (those of a squeamish nature look away now) when she moved her neck the wound squelched. So she was Squelch the Dog for a while. But the reason I describe this is to explain that it was an enormous wound and it didn't become infected, it did heal from the inside out and she was absolutely fine afterwards.

Aww, that's understandable! Bet he was very glad to see you too! :D

Scratchy's healed too quickly, trapping the pus in. On her way to the vet for a check up the scab came off. The vet gave it a good squeeze... I almost fainted and threw up at the same time! it healed fine after that though! :D

Thank you! I was talking about it with a friend at work today and she couldn't understand why he was just going to leave the hole without sewing it up or something. I did say that perhaps it's because if it healed over it might get infected inside. So sounds like I was kinda right!

Aww, that's understandable! Bet he was very glad to see you too! :D

He'll forgive you. Remember bunnies live for the moment. I have to do all sorts to Grim and he stomps off and won't 'talk' to me for half an hour. Just make extra effort to give him lots of cuddles and positive interaction. It will heal up and he'll forget all about it. :)

I couldn't believe how good he was last night...

At about 11pm we were in the living room and I was sat on the floor stroking him, I had a look at his hole to see how it was after cleaning it late afternoon. It was gunking up a bit again so I thought I'd just try to clear it up a bit before bed. So got up, got a bit of cooled boiled water and some cotton buds, went back to him, and he was still laying down where I'd left him. So started stroking him again, and he let me clean the hole with absolutely no fuss whatsoever  He didn't even flinch. And there was the vet, saying it'd be a two-person job! He is such a good bunny

Okay so proper update now!

Thursday and Friday he had clearly had enough of me poking his hole with cotton buds and it was a struggle for both of us! My Mum had to hold him down but he was really not happy about it and kicking away at her. The good thing was that on Friday/Saturday the hole hadn't closed up/gone pus-y overnight like it had at the beginning of the week.

Saturday I took him to the vet for a check-over. The hole wasn't as big as he wanted it to be, probably because I hadn't been able to do it very well the 2 nights previously! So he tried to give it a scrape, but Hopscotch wasn't having any of it. So the vet kept him and took him to the vet surgery to put him under and do it. So I went back to collect him when it was done. I think he is pleased with how it's gone so far and how it looked when he could get a proper go at it. I'm taking him back again in 2 weeks where he'll probably put him under again to have another look.

So yes, it has been rather emotionally draining! Not helped by the fact that when I got home from picking him up yesterday afternoon that the post had come with a big fat bill for January's visits and surgery! Hopefully the next 2 weeks will go well... I'm off on holiday for 4 weeks the day after the next check up, so will be leaving my parents in charge, good luck to them!

Been back to see the vet today. He didn't put him under this time, but gave his hole a proper clean and opened it up again (more than I can!). There was a little bit of pus but it's looking good & I think he's pleased with it. Just need to carry on with cleaning it and flushing it through at home. After tomorrow Mum will be in charge so I hope she can manage it okay  Will give her a crash course before I go!

However, it doesn't look very nice again! :( And he is a bit cross! He hasn't eaten any of the yummy things I've given him since getting home about an hour ago :( But I've seen him nibbling some hay. Will just keep checking on him over the afternoon.

Well, the hole was smaller, I'm unsure what it really looks like at the moment as I'm leaving Mr Grumpy alone to chill out for a while! I will give his face a clean up this evening and have a good look at it.

He has eaten his carrot and slice of banana now, and the crunchy that I left for him. I put some pellets in his pen too but he hadn't touched them. I don't think he's moved from this spot in the litter tray since I brought him upstairs for a rest! So I've put his pellets in the litter tray with him so he doesn't have to get up if he fancies them.

I've had an update today from my Mum:

Hi Helen
Bunny has had check up at the vet's today. The vet is very pleased with him. No pus to be seen and he is not going to reopen the hole at the moment. He said that Hopscotch will probably always have a bit of a wet nose due to scarring and the occasional sneeze is ok. I have to ring him in a weeks time.
So we are all happy bunnies.
