  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Metaclop/ domperidome.

Mama Doe
I have been given these from different vets for different bunnies in the past.

Can anyone tell me how they differ and what they do diffrently.:?

Metoclopromide increases the rate of gut motility at the top end of the GI tract

Domperidone increases gut motility in the lower GI tract

Thanks for your answer.

This raises more questions.
The problem is I dont realy know the questons:roll:

What has been the problem with some of my buns that has made them require one type of medication rather than the other:? (this is a thought I dont expect anyone to answer;))

I will be seeing one of my vets on tuesday, I will ask her then.
I just was just curious and always wanting to learn.:)

With respect. Domperidone is marketed for humans as acting on the upper end of the gut.
It is pharmacologically related to metaclopramide but does not cross the blood brain barrier so it does not have the neurological side effects.
It certainly acts throughout the whole gut in rabbits, (unlike metaclopramide which only acts on the upper GI tract).
My rabbit Thumper, would take domperidone much more easily than Zantac (ranitidine) & it was more effective for his severe caecal issues. He had no side effects when he needed over double the recommended dose for rabbits.

Thank you, I did not know that :)
