  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Parsley has had to have penile reconstruction UD post 54 back to vet

parsnipbun

Wise Old Thumper
Parsley was doing a rare bit of head humping today (he hardly ever humps) and got bitten badly . . . We rushed him to the vet and just caught our specialist surgeon vet as she was literally getting in her car having locked up the surgery.

She re-opened at once and called a vet nurse to come back from home and they operated at once.

The end of his penis was crushed and cut and he has had to have some of it off (quite a lot) - she has done some kind of reconstruction thing and we are all very much hoping that once the swelling goes down he will be able to pee etc. She has put in some kind of temporary thing to keep the uretha open.

However he has had to stay in and stay sedated so that he does not try and lick/nibble the affected area.

We are all in shock and very worried about him . . it was a long op. and he has the huge abscess in his head which makes GA risky . . not to mention that the part of the body that was being operated on is very very sensitive and he does not cope well with pain.

He has come round but the next 48 hours are vital.

Another vet will be checking on him soon . . we are not allowed to have him home as he cannot be moved at present:(

It seems only the other day that he had to have his huge op for his broken leg - and then the ops to take all the pins and plates out, and then all the scans etc etc for his inner ear . .

and yet he is such an amazingly and totally incredibly lively bun - it feels so odd here tonight without him:( - he's like a cross between a 2 year old child and a lager lout - completely chaotic and all over the place always.

Really NEED to have him back with us . . .

Oh no! Sending millions of vibes for your lovely boy. It's great that he's come round and fingers crossed he'll get through the next 48 hours safely and be home with you soon...

Oh no, that sounds awful. :( I hope he has a comfortable night and goes on to make a full recovery. Sending lots of vibes. xxx

After my wonderful bunny run and my delight, I am sending mega vibes to your wee fella. Will be watching for updates.xxx

The night check vet just rang to say he was looking ok considering - he has drunk something and nibbled some hay {we were in such a rush this afternoon we didn't take in any of the wild/forage food we usually take for them . . ] . She is keeping him sedated and sleepy and giving him fluids . . . They are not in 24 hours so he's on his own now till the morning . . but its that or take him to the Vet 24 who are awful . . . or home - which means he would get more excited and not so sedated.

I hate that he's not home but can see he has to be kept very calm.

They still don't know if he can wee on his own.

Oh gosh...poor little Parsley!! :cry::cry:

Sending him all the vibes I can muster! If there's anything I can do, let me know!!

Thank you - we may need to call on you for help at some point this week as we are both due to have long days away working at certain times - both of them totally unalterable . .

will see how he is tomorrow and what he will need in the way of constant care and meds
